As a passionate movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on the captivating series known as “The X-Files.” This show was an undeniable pop culture juggernaut during the ’90s and carried its influence well into the early 2000s. The unforgettable duo of David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully) reprised their iconic roles not just for a feature film in 2008, but they graced us with two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018.
Now, there’s been buzz about a reboot, with Ryan Coogler of “Sinners” fame taking the director’s chair. While it seems unlikely that we’ll see this reboot on our screens by 2025, the enigmatic world of Mulder and Scully may once again captivate us on television. However, whether Mulder and Scully themselves will be part of the new iteration is a bit unclear, but Gillian Anderson has shared her thoughts on the matter.
As an ardent fan of “The X-Files,” who likely tuned in when I was probably too young for such a show, Dana Scully has always had a unique spot in my affection. This could explain the complex emotions I’m experiencing following news about her recent remarks on the Ryan Coogler reboot. On the morning talk show, “This Morning,” she addressed rumors that she’d discussed the project with Coogler. She stated:
I had a conversation with him, and during our talk, I expressed, “I believe you are the ideal candidate for whatever task it is, should anyone decide to do it. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to give me a call. If your call comes at a convenient time when things seem right, maybe we can move forward.” He’s truly exceptional.
Gillian Anderson’s response to the X-Files question was courteous but ambiguous, and she even praised Coogler. Her comments stand out in contrast to Chris Carter’s, who expressed enthusiasm about seeing what someone else does with the series after Season 11 ended, a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with, particularly for Scully.
As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that the way Season 11 wrapped up for Scully leaves me hesitant about the prospect of seeing Gillian Anderson reprise her role, given the ongoing implications of those final revival plot twists. Frankly, none of my top 20 picks for “The X-Files” originated from Season 1. I can’t help but feel vindicated when Anderson decided against returning for Season 12, and I wholeheartedly support a Ryan Coogler reboot that introduces fresh characters instead of focusing on Mulder and Scully’s past exploits. That being said, I won’t object if they decide to bring back Doggett, given Robert Patrick’s enthusiasm for the role!
If Gillian Anderson were to play Scully again, particularly alongside David Duchovny as Mulder, I wouldn’t stage a massive protest, but I could certainly choose not to watch it. I’d rather overlook how Season 11 portrayed her character. Her career is thriving in various other aspects.
