The continuous debates about HBO’s and its corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery’s future seem strikingly similar to a quote from one of their successful shows: the powerful businessman, Logan Roy, telling his feuding offspring “You don’t take your responsibilities seriously.
For some time now, HBO, once a dominant force in premium TV, has appeared overly reactive and anxious, often following others’ success instead of focusing on its own strengths. Last month, HBO’s streaming service renamed itself back to HBO Max, restoring a brand identity that it had given up less than two years prior. Now, the merger that formed WBD (Warner Bros. Discovery) is unraveling, with HBO and the newly named HBO Max joining Warner Bros.’ TV and movie studios, along with other profitable assets on one platform, while cable networks like CNN, TNT, and the Discovery channels are moving to a less favorable one. A company initially envisioned as a harmonious blend of strengths under the leadership of WBD’s David Zaslav, who previously excelled at Discovery, is instead experiencing a reversal and a pullback.
Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has announced that they are rebranding HBO Max as a means to “give these renowned brands the targeted focus and strategic agility necessary to thrive in today’s rapidly changing media environment.” It’s worth noting that this tactic mirrors a recent move by Comcast, who separated their less strategically significant cable brands into SpinCo.
What stands out about Zaslav’s leadership is a sense of continuous indecision — should it be HBO Max or Max? Should they consolidate various entertainment brands under one umbrella, or jettison those that no longer align with the current mission? In this context, the name change for HBO Max could be seen as an effort to unite the streaming service and the network prior to a potential spin-off. However, both the name change and the spin-off came as unexpected developments. This suggests a forward-thinking leadership style that, so far, hasn’t been beneficial for a brand that prides itself on its careful and thoughtful approach towards creators.
From an optical standpoint, it may seem implausible that Zaslav’s actions are solely geared towards maximizing shareholder value, given his substantial compensation last year, which totaled over $50 million despite WBD experiencing a loss of approximately $11.5 billion. Notably, a significant portion of the board voted against endorsing this pay package. Even individuals with conservative political views might find it apparent that Zaslav is exploiting WBD to its full potential. There has been extensive discussion about this CEO’s unique leadership approach; what stands out, however, is how little he seems to grasp or show concern for how perfectly he embodies a stereotype from reality TV, the affluent and bumbling antagonist.
Amidst the turmoil all around, HBO and its streaming service continue to thrive, excelling in various areas: “The Last of Us” and “The White Lotus” on traditional TV, as well as “The Pitt” and “Hacks” on their streaming platform. This year alone, they boast an impressive four shows that are poised to shape the Emmy Awards landscape. These series embody a certain standard that has historically been characteristic of HBO, contributing significantly to its success – consistency. If you’re not currently enjoying their Sunday-night lineup, the reasoning is that it’s worth holding onto your subscription: The brand’s strength ensures that the next round will offer something appealing to you.
Common corporate turmoil generally doesn’t reach the notice of ordinary viewers. However, a perception that the flagship television network is being managed haphazardly isn’t an image a typical CEO would want to project, whether to rivals or the creative industry. HBO is a reputable brand with a rich legacy – one that currently finds itself thriving, surprisingly, despite being governed in a seemingly careless manner. TV enthusiasts can only hope that this stroke of good fortune persists, or that perhaps there won’t be another news update about Zaslav changing his mind again soon.
