After Murderbot’s Early Season 2 Renewal From Apple TV+, I Love What The Stars Told Us About Doing It ‘Over And Over Again’

Among the most hilarious shows gracing the 2025 television lineup is one that keeps audiences chuckling through the unusual blend of deadpan humor from Alexander Skarsgård and heartfelt acts by his fellow cast members. Fortunately for enthusiasts, Apple TV+ has already confirmed that Murderbot will return for another season, allowing subscribers to look forward to the finale on July 11, knowing full well that the journey doesn’t end there. In other words, Apple TV+ has given us an early green light for Season 2 of Murderbot, ensuring fans can enjoy the finale and anticipate more adventures with SecUnit.

Mentioning the good news brought to mind what Akshay Khanna and Tamara Podemski shared with TopMob regarding a potential second season. However, let’s focus on the present for now!

Murderbot Returns For Season 2

In the universe crafted by author Martha Wells, the Murderbot series made its debut on Apple TV+ in May, captivating both those who had read the books and newcomers alike. The streaming service announced the renewal for Season 2 a day before the Season 1 finale on July 11. Behind the scenes, a talented team was at work, resulting in the series earning a Certified Fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes. Notable figures such as Academy Award nominees Chris and Paul Weitz served as showrunners, while Emmy winner Alexander Skarsgård took on the roles of star and executive producer.

Expressing it in a more conversational manner: The Weitz brothers expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the reception of “Murderbot”, stating they’re thrilled to return to Martha Wells’s universe and collaborate again with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios, and the rest of the team. With seven Murderbot Diaries novellas written by Martha Wells, there’s ample source material for the show to draw from, as the first season was adapted solely from the initial novel. Alexander Skarsgård will carry on the intricate process of donning the Murderbot armor, following his preference for practical effects over CGI.

Audience members should tune in to the final episode to discover how the initial season influences Murderbot’s upcoming storyline, and it’s intriguing to ponder if the Weitz brothers intended the Season 1 actors when they hinted at collaborating with “the rest of the crew” for Season 2. No matter what lies ahead, the cast appeared excited during our conversation earlier this year at Apple TV+’s Murderbot press event.

What Akshay Khanna and Tamara Podemski Told Us

During my opportunity to chat with the cast of Murderbot on Apple TV+’s press junket, it was several months before Season 2 was even considered for renewal. However, I couldn’t help but ask Akshay Khanna and Tamara Podemski if they would be keen to reprise their roles in a potential second season: They didn’t reveal how Season 1 would conclude, but they made it clear that they were eager to continue portraying their characters if given the chance. Podemski, who brings Bharadwaj, the hapless geochemist, to life, expressed her desire to return to her character if asked.

For avid book enthusiasts like yourself, you’re well-versed with Book 2’s content. However, the placement of PresAux within that narrative might leave some uncertainty. Yet, the world is so captivating that we can’t help but wish to revisit it repeatedly.

Askshay Khanna, portraying the character of the wormhole expert Ratthi (it would be wise to keep him at a distance from any firearms), mirrored the feelings of his fellow cast member. He voiced his agreement:

Without a moment’s hesitation, we’d return. I’m genuinely eager to observe their progress, given that the series follows a unique narrative trajectory. It promises to be quite fascinating indeed!

The question isn’t about whether the cast members desire a return, but rather if their characters are left at the end of Season 1 in such a way that they must reappear. Book readers might have an inkling of what lies ahead, but I personally am thrilled about the early renewal and hope that the actors get their wish for multiple comebacks.

On this coming Friday, July 11th, catch the finale of Season 1 of “Murderbot” on Apple TV+. From there, you can stream the entire first season. Whether or not it ends with a suspenseful cliffhanger is yet to be determined as filming for Season 2 was completed before the renewal. Regardless, Murderbot’s story will continue in Season 2 (and hopefully beyond “Sanctuary Moon”).
