As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who has spent countless hours watching superhero movies and reading comics, I must say that the idea of Kit Connor playing Hulkling seems like a stroke of genius. Having seen him and Joe Locke’s chemistry in Heartstopper, it’s clear they have a unique connection on screen that could translate perfectly into the Marvel universe.
Essentially, Episode 5 of Agatha All Along unveiled that Joe Locke’s character is none other than Wiccan, the superpowered offspring of the Scarlet Witch – in essence, he’s almost the real deal but not officially named yet. This revelation paves the way for Hulkling to appear, and there’s an actor who seems tailor-made for this role.
From the very start of Agatha All Along, the true nature of Joe Locke’s character was a somewhat hidden enigma. Regrettably, an initial trailer inadvertently revealed this secret through its subtitles.
There’s not much information available about him: it is known that a sigil spell was cast on him, silencing him from disclosing his name to others; he currently has a boyfriend named Eddie, though their relationship might not endure for long; and he seems to have dedicated his life to the study of witchcraft under Agatha Harkness.
To put it another way, if there was any doubt before, Episode 5 leaves no room for misunderstanding. Agatha says to him, “You remind me so much of your mother,” which confirms that the character is none other than Billy Kaplan, also known as Wiccan.
Who is Wiccan?
Some quick details: Wiccan, real name Billy Kaplan, is the reincarnated son of Wanda Maximoff.
In the series WandaVision, Wanda’s children, William and Tommy, are brought into being by magic, serving as a part of Wanda’s dream life alongside Vision in Westview. However, when she dismantles the enchantment, these children cease to exist. Later on, in Doctor Strange 2, Wanda makes an attempt to reconnect with her kids across the multiverse.
In essence, this scenario resembles comic books, yet there’s an essential distinction: Wanda brought her twins into existence using spirits from the afterlife, only for them to be reclaimed by Mephisto (for now, let’s just say he’s a demon). The magic within them was so potent that it ultimately caused Mephisto’s destruction. However, it appears that their souls were sacrificed in the process.
Instead, we find that William has been reborn as Billy Kaplan in New York City. In Agatha All Along, his past is subtly altered, but in the comics, he becomes a member of the Young Avengers. Adopting the role of an Asgardian, he adopts a style reminiscent of Thor, eventually assuming the name Wiccan for himself.
In the meantime, Thomas reappears under the alias Tommy Shepherd, more commonly recognized as ‘Speed’. (You can probably guess his abilities from his nickname.)
Later, their hidden lineage is unveiled, and following the conclusion of the Civil War, these siblings embark on a quest to locate the Scarlet Witch.
Wiccan and Hulkling relationship
There’s some uncertainty about whether Hulkling will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he plays a crucial role in Wiccan’s narrative. Essentially, Hulkling is a mixed-race character (Skrull and Kree) who’s part of the Young Avengers team. However, what truly stands out is that he’s Wiccan’s romantic partner.
In the original Captain Marvel comics, Mar-Vell (not Carol Danvers) had a short romantic relationship with a Skrull princess, which resulted in the birth of their child, Theodore Altman. Due to the nature of the Skrulls’ abilities, young Theodore was taken to Earth and raised as a human to keep him safe. This allowed him to blend effortlessly into high school life, much like the Skrulls portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who also possess shapeshifting capabilities.
As it turned out, I had been enlisted in the Avengers Emergency Response Program without my knowledge, a contingency plan for assembling a team if the Avengers were incapacitated or disbanded. Suddenly, Iron Lad, a young version of Kang the Conqueror (don’t worry about the details right now), approached me and invited me to join the Young Avengers. In this new role, I took on the superhero persona of Hulkling.
Indeed, Hulkling doesn’t have a direct connection to the Hulk. Here are the two primary reasons behind his name: firstly, he’s an avid admirer of the Hulk, and secondly, his physical appearance bears a striking resemblance to the Hulk. That’s all there is to it.
After the events of Secret Wars in 2015, Wiccan and Hulkling became part of Avengers Idea Mechanics alongside Hawkeye, Songbird, and other superpowered individuals. For a brief period, an evil sorcerer took control of Wiccan, but fortunately, Hulkling assisted him in expelling the dark entity.
They teamed up as the Young Avengers, and during that time, their romantic relationship developed deeply, establishing them as one of the most influential and recognized same-sex couples in the Marvel comic book world.
In the course of numerous thrilling journeys alongside various Avengers squads, Wiccan found himself developing deep affection for his fellow team member Hulkling. This heartfelt relationship continues to resonate across the vast expanses of space even now. (Marvel)
This Hulkling casting just makes sense
Kit Connor, who stars alongside Joe Locke in “Heartstopper”, is an ideal choice for the role of Hulkling. While he might not be enthusiastic about it, this casting seems spot-on.
Last week saw the release of Heartstopper Season 3, displaying a captivating chemistry between the characters. This on-screen duo has certainly left audiences wanting more, suggesting they could excel in future collaborations; if Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling can share the screen so effectively, then there’s no reason Connor and Locke couldn’t do the same!
As an ardent fan, I can’t help but share some intriguing news that has been circulating recently. Earlier this year, there were whispers from MyTimeToShineHello suggesting Marvel might be considering Connor for a role. Now, MyTimeToShineHello isn’t always the most reliable source, so it’s wise to take such rumors with a grain of salt. But hey, a fan can dream, right?
On the other hand, Alex P from The Cosmic Circus supported this notion, tweeting: “Indeed, I found it a bit stereotypical due to Heartstopper, but we must acknowledge that it could be a feasible choice.
Initially thought to portray Hulkling in Agatha All Along, Miles Gutierrez-Riley is now believed to be playing a different character, Eddie.
Prior to the Wiccan unveiling, Locke expressed to Radio Times that he would be thrilled to collaborate with Kit once more. He’s an exceptional actor and our working relationship is fantastic. If a suitable opportunity arises in the future for us to team up again, I would be overjoyed.
In a chat with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, Connor chose to tackle the speculation. It seems like he might be trying to minimize it, or perhaps he’s just not showing much concern.
“A buddy of mine shared some gossip with me, but I can’t confirm it as fact, at least not yet. You see, my friend Joe is deeply engrossed in the Marvel universe and has an exciting new project brewing. I wouldn’t want to spoil his momentum by spreading unverified information.
I believe he’s planning to cause harm, and I must admit, I’m intrigued by the thought. I plan to let him continue for some time, my assumption is correct.
In a different conversation with Omelette, he openly shared his reservations about becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To put it frankly, he felt uncertain that he’d make a suitable fit for the character Hulkling.
It seems likely that continued frequent appearances with Joe for a few more years might cause others to grow weary of our company.
