In an unexpected move, the revamped edition of Bethesda’s fourth RPG series installment, initially released in 2006 as Oblivion, has made its way onto the market, nearly two decades later. To mark this occasion and unveil the enhanced game, the development team behind the original title staged a nostalgic gathering, an event that unfortunately became quite awkward for Todd Howard.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but share my thoughts about the behind-the-scenes video for “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” that recently dropped on Bethesda’s YouTube channel. Todd Howard, the boss man himself, warned us developers upfront that this footage was going to be a bit uncomfortable to watch. It’s not hard to figure out why – seeing our past selves on screen, we can’t help but notice how much we’ve evolved over the years, from physical changes to the way we dress. The team reflects on how significant the debut of “Oblivion” was for the studio in the past. In fact, it marked their initial venture into large-scale production, which received a warm welcome from gamers. Additionally, they remember that the unveiling of the fourth installment at the major gaming expo represented their first public demonstration.
The content features various pieces derived from the initial version of “Oblivion,” including a road that was the inaugural one developed within the game. Remarkably, one of the developers likened the development process of
As a gamer, it feels like stepping into a time machine, reliving those intense, nerve-wracking days at an extraordinary summer camp. An ordinary summer camp, this wasn’t. Little did we know that we were on the cusp of unleashing Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Fallout 4 to the gaming world. That’s what Ashley Cheng, the senior developer of the original Oblivion, shared with us.
Todd Howard, with a hint of embarrassment veiled in a smile, watched old footage featuring his 20-year-older self discussing friends who didn’t grasp his passion for game creation and preferred he rejoin the chess club. As the current head of Bethesda, he humorously commented on the entire video.
Back then, achieving what we aimed for was quite challenging. Just as I anticipated, it turned out to be a bit uncomfortable. Looking at it now and surveying the room, it still retains that familiar feeling.
