After 15 years, John Marston’s voice reveals why Red Dead Redemption’s main character „is screaming at people, for no reason sometimes”

Approximately fifteen years back, Rockstar Games studio unveiled one of its finest games ever – Red Dead Redemption. Despite the significant span of time since this game’s debut, Robert Wiethoff (the man behind John Marston’s voice) has only recently revisited and played this classic title himself.

Wiethoff disclosed on his YouTube channel an in-depth gameplay video detailing his early experiences in Red Dead Redemption (RDR). Incidentally, he also unveiled some intriguing tidbits from the period when he was recording lines for the main character. For example, he explained why John Marston speaks more loudly while riding a horse, even if his conversation partner is right beside him.

Wiethoff pointed out that the game incorporated motion capture for actors’ actions and dialogues were often recorded during those sessions. However, when it came to dialogue while riding horses, a recording booth was utilized instead. Additionally, Wiethoff shared that he received a suggestion from the developer: the lines spoken from the horse needed to be loud enough for the player to clearly hear them, even in the midst of a storm or close to a train.

On this platform, it’s amusing to observe John shouting at people, often without any apparent reason […] I recall someone advising, ‘You need to deliver your lines as if they would still be audible if you were galloping next to a train during a storm. So, yell them out forcefully since you definitely want the other person to catch what you’re saying.’ In simpler terms, speak loudly and clearly because you want your message to be heard over noise and distance.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, the novelty technology was instrumental in enhancing Arthur Morgan’s dialogue, particularly during chase scenes or when a character was at a distance. However, during more tranquil instances and close-up conversations, a softer version of the dialogue was employed. Naturally, this necessitated recording those lines on two occasions.

Incidentally, the audience was amazed by how well the actor tossed the hat during the match. At that moment, one might expect him to use a feature called “dead eye” to make hitting the target effortless. However, Wiethoff opted not to utilize it, but still managed to make an incredibly accurate shot, leaving both himself and the spectators in awe.
