Late night television was full of Broadway excitement this week. The Late Show featured performances by two former Glee stars: Lea Michele sang a song from Chess, and Andrew Rannells performed his signature song, “I Believe,” from The Book of Mormon. It was a special moment for Stephen Colbert, who originally introduced Rannells performing the song at the Tonys fifteen years ago, and it connected nicely with both the anniversary celebration and The Late Show’s farewell tour at the Ed Sullivan Theater.
I also wanted to highlight a really clever way The Daily Show illustrated how inconsistent Trump’s Iran policy was. There were so many inconsistencies, and they weren’t humorous – they were actually quite troubling. It’s almost too easy to catch Trump in a falsehood, and honestly, dwelling on it just leaves you feeling worse. But the show’s idea of having four different Trump personalities debate each other, like commentators on a sports show, was genuinely entertaining. And we really need to find those moments of levity, don’t we? Here’s a look at other funny moments from late night this week.

Shout-out Donna, Shout-out Cue-Card Wally, Shout-out Donna’s Sister’s Bakery

Ryan Gosling, a frequent guest on both Saturday Night Live and Late Night With Seth Meyers, jokingly complained that SNL dresser Donna Richards prefers Jason Momoa as a host. He found a small comfort in knowing Momoa hasn’t tried the homemade Pop-Tarts baked by Richards’s sister – and neither has Seth Meyers! Meyers pointed out that after 12 years of the show, he hasn’t received a single tart and didn’t even know Donna Richards had a sister who baked. It’s a funny reminder that even in long-standing relationships, you still discover new things about people.

Edward Norton Has Nothing to Promote

Ian McKellen’s Shakespeare performance on The Late Show earlier this year really resonated with viewers. This sparked a bit of a trend: John Lithgow wrote a poem for Stephen Colbert, but it didn’t quite land as well. Then, Elijah Wood mentioned McKellen’s poem, and Edward Norton decided to join in, responding with his own poem. The interview started with a casual conversation between Norton and Colbert, as Norton doesn’t currently have a movie or project to promote. It was amusing to hear him point out what other actors are always selling. He then described his unusual hobby of capturing toxic gases with barges, followed by a recitation of a shortened Walt Whitman poem. Overall, it was refreshing to hear Norton sincerely discuss the pressures of trying to be a good person these days. While the segment was a bit self-indulgent, it was enjoyable, like a sweet treat.

Boston Visits Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The character was perfectly played, reminiscent of improv training at the Groundlings. Will Burke, a producer for Jimmy Kimmel Live!, portrayed Sean Patrick O’Leary VI, a man dedicated to protecting the traditions of Brockton, Massachusetts – specifically, drinking from a “BORG.” A BORG, which stands for “Blackout Rage Gallon,” is a large container for alcohol commonly found on college campuses nationwide, not just around Boston. The character nailed the portrayal of a proudly inebriated local, and the performance had perfect timing and length. It was a very polished and professional bit.

The Tonight Show Goes Full Double Dare

Johnny Knoxville perfectly demonstrated his knack for unpredictable behavior on The Tonight Show. During a game called “Pop Quiz” – a silly setup with barber chairs, dunce caps, and trivia – he managed to steer the conversation into decidedly adult territory. The game itself, where wrong answers raise your seat and right answers raise your opponent’s, culminating in a burst of liquid, felt more suited for a kids’ channel like Nickelodeon. But Knoxville quickly changed that with a joke about a ‘pee-pee cam’ and a reference to an internet video, proving why he’s so well-paid for his outrageous antics.

The Daily Show Knows What News We Want to See
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=rIEGz9LtF3I
The most amusing thing this week was definitely the courtroom video from Afroman’s defamation trial. Back in 2022, police raided Afroman’s home, and he responded by writing and releasing songs – and even music videos using his security footage – playfully poking fun at the situation. The police, however, didn’t see the humor and sued him (whose real name is Joseph Edgar Foreman) for defamation and misusing their image. It was a ridiculous case with unbelievable testimony, and the judge ultimately ruled in favor of Foreman. Sergeant Randy Walters, who was the subject of Afroman’s song with a rather colorful title, was forced to answer questions about his mother and whether Afroman had an affair with his wife. He couldn’t definitively deny either claim. It was incredibly funny, and The Daily Show wisely let the footage mostly speak for itself, adding some clever Photoshop and jokes. They recognized that Afroman’s win was a win for everyone.
