As I sit down to write this, my fingers are still tingling from the adrenaline rush of performing at All In 2023, and my heart swells with pride as I look at my sold-out action figure. Blimey, who’d have thought a lad from the UK would end up here?
After spending eight years with New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Will Ospreay joined AEW earlier this year, rapidly rising to become one of their top performers. On Sunday during AEW’s main event All In pay-per-view, Ospreay claimed the International Championship title. Additionally, he introduced fresh attire and an entrance theme that align with the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Shadows video game.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t hide my excitement when I share that I’ve been chosen by Ubisoft to be an official ambassador for their game. Not only that, but the legendary Roger Craig Smith is lending his voice once more as Ezio Auditore da Firenze, narrating my very own story within this incredible role. This isn’t just a collaboration; it feels like a dream come true! Fans have long known about my affection for the series, and I proudly donned Jacob Frye’s top hat and hidden blade at New Japan’s Wrestle Kingdom event back in January. Now, partnering with Ubisoft on an official level is beyond anything I could have imagined.
“I have an exceptional team, and one member of it, our media coordinator Farbod Esnaashari, introduced me to Ubisoft at the start of the year regarding Wrestle Kingdom in New Japan for the Jacob Frye entrance. As TopMob reported, they were thrilled with how that turned out. Their excitement led to us collaborating on Shadows, a game set in Japan, where my background and ties align perfectly. It felt like I was the ideal choice to promote this upcoming release. My team made it seamless to work with Ubisoft, making me an effective ambassador for Shadows, due out later this year.”
With his official designation as an Assassin by Ubisoft, Ospreay took it a step further and established his own Assassin Brotherhood, comprising of his fellow wrestlers.
“I mean, I’m gonna say Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis, just because they’re obviously my boys right there. Callum Newman over in New Japan right now. I would go with Gisele Shaw. She’s so sick and I’ve always had a great relationship with her. Let’s do one more,” he quickly pauses. “Let’s do Pac, as well. Love Pac.”
Since joining AEW full-time in February, Ospreay has had to adjust to an entirely new routine because it was his first experience with weekly live TV broadcasts, which he wasn’t anticipating initially. Furthermore, as a prominent figure in AEW, he’s made various media appearances and even attended the San Diego Comic-Con in July to support the company.
“Being on live national television is an experience no one can truly prepare for, especially when the American audience embraces you so warmly. Yet, it seems this is just part of the job when you arrive with a cheerful disposition and are ready to do whatever necessary to get things moving, all while showing your passion for wrestling. To be honest, I’ve always aspired to reach greater heights in my career, but never thought it was attainable. So, I’m genuinely thankful that people have accepted me so positively. Frankly, I’m surprised at how quickly I’ve adapted. Though others may see it as effortless, I often question myself and strive to ensure I’m pleasing everyone while maintaining the proper approach.”
One more facet of Ospreay’s AEW journey involves the release of action figures modeled after him. Over the weekend, a second action figure for AEW featuring him in his All In attire from 2023 was unveiled and quickly sold out. Now, he’s aiming to create another figure, this time dressed in gear inspired by Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.
It seems crucial to consider that option. Considering the extraordinary costume I’ll be wearing at Wembley, I can’t help but think it deserves recognition. Airhead Diva Sarinah, my talented costume designer, is responsible for creating all of my jackets. This time, she has surpassed herself, and if Ubisoft were to produce an action figure based on this design, it would be absolutely stunning.
Regarding playing Assassin’s Creed: Shadows upon its release, Ospreay openly acknowledges that he doesn’t have as much free time for gaming these days due to being a father who frequently travels from the UK to AEW shows in the U.S. Nevertheless, he plans to make room for his beloved video game series.
He admitted that his schedule is so packed he rarely gets a chance to game, but when he does, it’s usually with his five-year-old son who enjoys playing Spyro and Lego superhero games. He attempts to secretly play Assassin’s Creed: Mirage when his son isn’t present because it’s not suitable for him. When Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is released, he needs some personal time to decide when he can dedicate to playing that game.
Beyond his open enthusiasm for video games and wrestling, Ospreay is equally unafraid to express his English identity. He recently shared an Instagram story highlighting British wrestlers like Robbie X and his companion, current RevPro Champion Michael Oku, which he proudly acknowledged as shining stars in the British wrestling world – a scene he remains strongly connected to.
“The guy pointed out that British wrestling holds significant value because it often gets overshadowed by countries like America, Canada, Japan, and Mexico when it comes to wrestling promotion. He noted that British wrestling is more of a social event, but the raw talent is evident. He went on to say that every individual in that picture is revolutionizing the sport and are far beyond what many consider to be game-changers in wrestling. In his opinion, everyone from that island depicted in the photo is on par with the top wrestlers globally.”
As a gamer, I stand tall with pride for my nation. Every accomplishment we’ve achieved, every moment of joy we’ve shared, fills me with immense satisfaction. I’m thrilled beyond words for our passionate fan base who’ve made their desire for pro wrestling here loud and clear. And I couldn’t be more thankful to AEW for providing this incredible opportunity for British wrestling enthusiasts like myself to revel in the world of wrestling right here at home.
