Alongside plans for a live-action film adaptation, there’s also a mature-themed animated movie inspired by the video game that is being developed.
According to Deadline, Aaron Guzikowski, the writer behind the 2013 film Prisoners directed by Denis Villeneuve, has agreed to pen the script for an upcoming Death Stranding animated movie. This movie is being marketed with a tone comparable to mature anime movies like Predator: Killer of Killers and the forthcoming John Wick animated prequel.
Guzikowski expressed his enthusiasm by saying, “I adore the imaginative realm of Death Stranding; it’s both dark and hopeful in its beauty, offering a creative freedom that I find captivating. I feel privileged and thrilled to be invited by Hideo Kojima, whose work has always inspired me, to contribute to his masterpiece, helping to weave fresh tales into this intriguing, thought-provoking universe.
The production company, Line Mileage, is responsible for creating the Death Stranding anime. Chief Creative Officer Daniel Dominguez expressed his belief that Death Stranding is the most visually striking and intellectually engaging video game he has ever encountered.
He continued by saying, “Just like the initial viewing of Blade Runner or Ghost in the Shell, playing this brought about the same intense emotional surge, physical impact, and mental satisfaction for me.
In terms of the Death Stranding anime, it’s still in its infancy and details such as who will be directing or providing voices are yet to be announced. Regarding the live-action film, Kojima is collaborating with A24, and Michael Sarnoski (known for Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One) is slated to direct. However, neither project has a release date confirmed as of now.
In gaming terms, I’m super pumped that I’ll be diving back into the Death Stranding universe with Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, dropping on my PlayStation 5 come June 26th! Can’t wait to explore this post-apocalyptic world once again.
