The limited series production by Netflix titled “Adolescence” has soared to the summit of the Nielsen rankings. According to this ratings powerhouse, the series accumulated a staggering 1.44 billion minutes in viewership during the week spanning March 17th to March 23rd – its inaugural full week on air. This represented an impressive increase of 59% compared to its initial release, where it ranked at number 9. Nielsen highlighted that the show resonated particularly well with adults aged 35-64 (an overperformance of 56%) and Hispanic audiences (an overperformance of 26%).
In terms of streaming success, “Wicked” has proven to be a massive hit. Debuting on Peacock on March 21, the blockbuster movie managed to secure a spot in Nielsen’s top 10 streaming programs for the week ending March 23, despite only being available for just three days that week. “Wicked” garnered an impressive viewership of 905 million minutes, and it attracted both young viewers between 2 and 11 years old and adults aged 18 to 49, according to Nielsen’s data.
The showing was strong enough to place “Wicked” as the second highest-grossing film of the week, trailing only “Moana 2,” which accumulated a total of 1.13 billion minutes watched this week, ranking it third overall and first among movies.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve been captivated by the recent surge in streaming success stories. Last week, Shonda Rhimes’ latest Netflix offering, “The Residence,” held the second spot, racking up an impressive 1.36 billion minutes watched, particularly resonating with a large segment (25%) of Black viewers, making it the most popular among original series in this regard. On the other hand, Amazon Prime Video’s “Reacher” continues its streak, drawing at least a billion viewing minutes for the fifth consecutive week, now standing tall at week five.
For two weeks running, Prime Video boasts three shows among the top ten originals, with “The Wheel of Time” and “Invincible” being included this week as well.
Additionally, Apple TV+’s “Severance” achieved a new weekly record (876 million) during its Season 2 finale, placing it at the top of this week’s chart. This is the first time the show has entered the overall top 10, having consistently ranked among the original series top 10 throughout its season run. “Severance” also attracted the largest percentage (71%) of adult viewers aged 18-49 among all original series.
Other notable performances include “The White Lotus” achieving a series peak of 973 million minutes, ranking it 7th overall. Meanwhile, “The Pitt” from Max made its debut in the Top 10 originals for the first time, tallying up to 466 million minutes, securing the 8th spot on that list.
The Library remains among the top 10, with titles such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Bluey,” and “Family Guy” consistently ranking high.
First, let’s review Nielsen’s overall streaming rankings from March 17-23, 2025. We will then break down the list into three categories: original streaming titles, acquired titles, and movies.
