At first glance, another season for “Adolescence” appeared doubtful since it was a limited series. Yet, following its remarkable performance on Netflix, there’s a real possibility that we might see it return.
The series revolves around Jamie, a 13-year-old boy who stands accused of fatally stabbing his female classmate. Over four intense and visually stunning episodes (each filmed in a single take), the truth behind the incident and its underlying causes are gradually revealed.
To put it simply, it’s been a smashing hit! It has garnered widespread acclaim and positive feedback from viewers worldwide, making it the fourth-most popular English-language series on Netflix to date. This achievement places it above all seasons of Bridgerton, The Queen’s Gambit, and even Season 3 of Stranger Things. However, it still trails behind Season 4 of Stranger Things in terms of viewership.
Adolescence was initially thought of as a self-contained tale with a definitive conclusion. Yet, there’s a possibility that we might see a second season unfold.
Adolescence Season 2 talks are happening
According to Deadline, production company Plan B, established by Brad Pitt, is discussing potential plans for the upcoming phase of the series “Adolescence” with director Philip Barantini.
It might not follow directly from Jamie’s story, but there’s still a possibility it could continue Jamie’s narrative.
Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, the co-presidents of Plan B, aim to “expand the focus, remain faithful to its essence, [and] avoid repetition.” They prefer not to disclose many details about their future projects, but they are looking forward to collaborating again with Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, who wrote Adolescence.
Following Graham’s statement to Variety about the “potential for creating another tale… let’s wait and see what the numbers indicate.
Moreover, Graham and Thorne expressed their desire to conclude the tale in Jamie’s room to Tudum. They explained, “We chose to wrap up the adventure where it started because that’s where the individual Jamie ultimately transformed into was conceived.
The possibility exists for it to tell a fresh tale with a new set of characters, yet should it come back, it might maintain its standalone episode format.
According to Gardner, Phil’s method of recording episodes in a single take isn’t just for show or a trick. Instead, it reflects and engages deeply with the topics being discussed.
In the initial discussions with Stephen and Jack, they expressed concern that it’s all too simple to avoid facing certain realities. They mentioned instances like avoiding looking at the school, the police station, the counseling center, or even one’s own family.
From this multi-faceted perspective, it’s possible to evade the topic. Our hypothesis was: if you can’t turn away, does it cause the subject to penetrate deeper into you? This idea was exhilarating.
While you wait, discover the reason behind Jamie’s murder of Katie in Netflix’s series Adolescence, uncover the real-life events that inspired the show, and explore other gripping Netflix thrillers worth watching.
