Adam McKay-Produced Documentary ‘You Need This’ From Banijay’s Scenery Probes Hyper-Consumerism (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for documentaries that delve deep into societal issues, I am utterly intrigued by “You Need This.” Having witnessed the transformative power of films like Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth and Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story, I find myself drawn to this thought-provoking exploration of consumerism and hyper-capitalism.

Following the exploration of climate change in his Oscar-nominated political satire “Don’t Look Up,” filmmaker Adam McKay now presents “You Need This,” an insightful documentary that delves into the complexities of consumerism and rampant capitalism.

Under the guidance of director Ryan Andrej Lough (“Entertainment”), “You Need This” is manufactured by McKay through Yellow Dot Studios, in collaboration with Scenery, a partnership between Isidoor Roebers, Lea Fels, and Banijay Benelux; and Tyler Owen and Cecilia Butler from Hôtel Motion Pictures.

ZDF Studio’s Off the Fence has obtained the exclusive global rights for a high-quality documentary, set to debut on various streaming, digital, and television platforms in 2025.

The book titled ‘You Need This’ delves into the development of consumerism, starting from the boundless enthusiasm of 1950s America, which eventually transformed into a worldwide structure that influences our wants, self-images, and actions. By conditioning people to seek significance and status through relentless consumption, this unquenchable system depletes our environment, strains our social connections, and negatively impacts our wellness.

The doc features interviews by bestselling writer Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, dream scientist Adam Haar-Horowitz, and lauded economist Juliet Schor.

As a passionate cinematography enthusiast, I’ve always been drawn to stories that resonate deeply. For years, I’ve immersed myself in the intricacies of various topics at Hôtel Motion Pictures, and I found myself increasingly troubled by the impact of consumer capitalism on our society. It seems we’ve become mere gears in a machine that churns out waste, fosters division, and wreaks havoc like nothing else in history. This realization compelled me to create a film that would echo these sentiments and spark conversations about our shared future.

Referring to it as a “creation of the 20th century,” Lough states that it has come to control various aspects of our lives, influencing us subtly and capitalizing on the degradation of both the environment and society.

Meanwhile, McKay asserts that the book “You Need This” demonstrates that it’s not cultural or political disagreements causing our world to be flipped on its head, but rather the unyielding pursuit of corporate profits driving consumerism.

Like the movie reveals the grim effects of worldwide consumption, it also manages to show something fascinating: an increasing consciousness emerging as individuals start recognizing the truth about the system we’ve unknowingly found ourselves in,” McKay explains further.

At Scenery, Roebers and Fels refer to “You Need This” as a “strong alarm bell, providing a crucial perspective on the highly capitalistic system that’s so ingrained in our culture, it often goes unnoticed as it exerts its impact.

The duo claim that the document encourages them to acknowledge the true price we pay for our consumption and challenges viewers to imagine a world where the well-being of the planet is valued above financial gain.

Under the support of Off the Fence, Roebers and Fels anticipate that “You Need This” will spark a worldwide dialogue about our common economic and environmental destiny.

I wholeheartedly recommend “You Need This,” a captivating production penned by comedy writer and actor Serra Naiman, who also brought us the beloved series “I Wrote This for You.” This heartwarming project is masterfully guided by executive producers Staci Roberts-Steele from Yellow Dot and Benjamin Rednour of Hôtel Motion Pictures.

The latest projects that Scenery has been involved with include “Front Row,” an engaging documentary film co-produced by Sarah Jessica Parker, which focuses on a gifted troupe of Ukrainian ballet dancers.
