AC Shadows Devs Tease Brutal New Difficulty Mode After Fan Backlash

According to the director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, they are considering implementing additional challenge levels based on player suggestions.

The fighting and hiding features in AC Shadows are widely admired by both long-time gamers, those who’ve taken a break, and new players. Yet, there’s disagreement among the community regarding the game’s level of challenge.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed some players find the game too easy due to its overly simplified parry system and predictable enemy attack patterns. Some of us even debate that Yasuke’s immense strength lacks a real challenge because of his high attack power and health levels.

Absolutely, when Naoe is in control, Expert mode definitely increases the challenge for stealth. However, some players might prefer Shadows to offer a more manageable experience during close combat. As per one developer, Ubisoft Quebec is working on addressing this issue.

AC Shadows may add “tougher setting” for difficulty

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025, Jonathon Dumont, the Creative Director, had a chat with GamesRadar. During this conversation, he shared that his team is constantly observing player activities in relation to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This observation helps them identify and make necessary adjustments such as bug fixes and improvements.

In other words, it’s clear that the developers have been keeping up with discussions about game difficulty settings. Consequently, Ubisoft Quebec is considering and potentially working on introducing a more challenging difficulty level for certain players.

To our users, Dumont asked, “How difficult do you prefer it to be?” However, we’re paying close attention to feedback on the game, taking into account what players have to say.

As for when the team will actually implement these possible alterations, it’s currently uncertain. For now, however, Dumont and their colleagues are concentrating on addressing constructive criticism in their work.

The director clarified, “Clearly, we won’t be able to tackle everything, but there are tasks we will be addressing. For our upcoming releases, you can expect a significant number of bug fixes and minor improvements.

Just as Odyssey and Valhalla have evolved significantly since their launches, so too does Assassin’s Creed Shadows aim to make players noticeable changes from its initial release to future updates.
