As a seasoned film enthusiast with over three decades of immersion in the dynamic world of global cinema, I am thrilled by this groundbreaking partnership between Aby Media and Globo. Having witnessed the evolution of storytelling across various continents, it is heartening to see such collaborations that emphasize creativity and adaptation in today’s industry.
Ablaze with excitement, the pioneering media company based in Ivory Coast – Aby Media, established by Bernard and Kimberley Azria alongside Brazilian heavyweight Globo, recently announced a fresh production-distribution pact. This deal encompasses a series of Globo’s beloved scripted programs. In accordance with the terms of this agreement, Aby Media will create local adaptations of several Globo shows, while they will also distribute the original versions of these programs within their territory.
This year’s MIP Africa in Cape Town (Sept. 2-4) is where you’ll find both Aby Media and Globo. They plan to exhibit their collection of programs at this event.
In Africa, some shows slated for adaptation or broadcast by Aby Media include “Pantanal,” “Total Dreamer,” “Shades of Sin,” and “The Other Side of Paradise.” The aim of producing local versions of these shows is to cater to the growing variety in preferences among viewers.
“For nearly three decades, I’ve been responsible for sharing Globo’s finalized programs across Africa. So, it gives me great joy and pride to begin this exceptional, first-of-its-kind collaboration with Globo. This partnership underscores our shared dedication to exceptional storytelling and signifies a major stride towards delivering top-notch, captivating content to African viewers.”
Kimberley Azria stated, “Our partnership with Globo underscores the value of creativity and flexibility in today’s media sector. Collaboratively, we are committed to generating content that connects with our local audience while maintaining top-notch quality.”
Media is committed to collaborating with and fostering local talent by creating content that spans both scripted and unscripted genres. This content aims to bridge cultural gaps, resonating on a global scale. The focus lies in telling a variety of stories that cater to diverse audiences worldwide. Some of the upcoming projects include a local reinterpretation of SIC Portugal’s “Lucky Break,” titled “Legends,” which revolves around a fictional football club; a drama series about the politically charged mystery of missing persons called “Echoes”; and a contemporary series, “Afrobeats,” driven by music from the African continent.
Speaking on the significance of such international collaborations, Fabio Mauro, head of Globo Content Distribution and Partnerships, expressed: “This collaboration bolsters our approach to selling format series, as demonstrated by ‘Brazil Avenue,’ which is set for adaptation in Turkey. We are confident in the power of our productions, the universality of our storylines, and with the sale of formats, we can blend Globo’s unique identity and Brazilian essence with local creativity.”
Angela Colla, who leads International Business and Coproductions at Globo, stated: “This project is particularly relevant given the current state of the media industry. With the increasing hunger for fresh, compelling content, there’s also a pressing need to manage risks and maximize resources. Adapting international scripted formats becomes, therefore, a smart business and creative tactic to handle these intricate challenges.”
