Absolutely Not

heads up: plot twists from the final episode of Season 1 for NBC’s St. Denis Medical titled “This Place is Our Everything” will be revealed. You can watch it tomorrow, only on Peacock with a valid subscription.

As a devoted movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share that “St. Denis Medical” has secured its spot on NBC’s spring 2025 TV lineup, ensuring a second season for this extraordinary ensemble of medical professionals. The early renewal was a testament to their collective talents, but rest assured, they didn’t bask in the glory. Instead, they dived headfirst into the intense narrative of “This Place is Our Everything.”

The story unfolds with a sudden storm causing havoc at the Emergency Department, where our protagonist Alex found herself juggling two crucial roles – being there for her husband during his vasectomy and managing the swamped ED. Allison Tolman, in an exclusive interview with TopMob, offers insights into this gripping episode.

As a movie critic, I must confess that this wasn’t the pulse-pounding intensity of NBC’s Chicago Med, but rather the more subdued St. Denis Medical. Initially, the scene was chaotic, but it eventually settled into a tranquil denouement. However, before the calm, Alex received an unexpected call from Joyce. She delivered a sobering message to Alex.

In essence, we might appear different on the surface, but when it comes to our dedication to this hospital, there’s a striking similarity between us. While some people merely punch in and out, we go beyond that. This place isn’t just a job for us; it’s an integral part of who we are. So, even on your days off, you’re here, Alex. It’s alright to acknowledge that fact.

In the first season, Alex struggled to juggle her duties as head nurse with her family responsibilities as a wife and mother. So, it wasn’t ideal for her when Joyce made a comparison between the two while Alex was busy in the ER and her husband was undergoing a procedure alone elsewhere in the hospital. The conflict about having more children, which arose during Josh Lawson’s big dance episode, seems to have been resolved off-screen. Eventually, it became clear to Alex that she needed to step away from work and be with her husband instead.

It’s clear that Joyce wasn’t unique in pointing out Alex’s workaholic habits. If the nurse had heard that criticism from Dr. Ron, Serena, or any other colleague, wouldn’t it still have resonated? I posed this question to Allison Tolman following the Season 1 finale of the popular mockumentary, and she replied:

The relationship between Joyce and Alex throughout the entire first season sets up the conversation where Alex, in disbelief, exclaims something like, “Oh my gosh, Joyce? Really?” or “Look at her over there!” This sudden comparison comes as a shock to her, making her realize that this is a path she’s been unknowingly treading. In that moment, she acknowledges the truth: this is where she’s headed. Despite our admiration for Joyce, Alex reacts strongly with a sense of surprise and firmness, saying in essence, “Whoa, not at all! This is not the direction I want to go.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’ve chuckled at the occasional glimpses into Joyce’s chaotic domestic life, but Allison Tolman, who plays Alex, made it clear that she yearns for something quite different. Despite my enjoyment of their scenes together, it was long overdue for a heartfelt conversation between Joyce and Alex.

It turns out that when I chatted with Allison Tolman on the red carpet at SCAD TVfest earlier this year, I had no clue how deeply we’d delve into the Alex/Joyce relationship as the season progressed. During our conversation in February, she mentioned the distinct “barrier” between Alex and Joyce that wasn’t present between Alex and Ron.

In my perspective, there’s a certain boundary I can’t cross when dealing with someone in a superior position, such as Joyce being Alex’s boss. Even though I might feel like telling her bluntly that she’s annoying and wrong, just like how I express myself freely with Ron, I find myself holding back. This dynamic adds an amusing twist to our interactions, as I can’t help but subtly point out her errors by saying things like, ‘Gosh, you too have your moments of foolishness.’ [laughs] It’s intriguing to see how I must restrain myself from voicing my honest opinions more openly. Alex isn’t one to hold back on expressing her thoughts often.

In the Season 1 finale, Alex didn’t show any temper tantrums, but she firmly refused to work on her day off. She delegated the ED tasks to Serena and then headed to her husband’s vasectomy appointment. Upon seeing her, he joked that he had indeed expected her to be absent, but in a playful manner.

The exchange brought to mind how Kyle Bornheimer skillfully utilized his screen time on St. Denis Medical as Tim, even though he appeared in just a few episodes before the final episode. Prior to this, Allison Tolman had expressed that she couldn’t have found a better collaborator to kickstart their work together. She admired his “genuine, pleasant, Midwestern charm” which made him an ideal choice for portraying Tim.

As a movie critic, I must confess, I find myself remarkably fortunate. The insight into Alex’s character, which I believe is crucial for the audience, is skillfully provided by glimpses of her family dynamics and marital relationship. Hearing that they’d be incorporating aspects of her personal life into the narrative piqued my interest significantly. Prior to this production, I was unfamiliar with Kyle. Despite the size of our quaint town, our paths hadn’t crossed until we commenced filming together, diving headfirst into those intimate make-out scenes in our debut episode. [laughs] Two seasoned actors, indeed.

In Season 2, will we encounter more of Kyle Bornheimer’s character Tim or maybe more from Alex’s family? It remains a mystery for now, but rest assured that NBC is renewing St. Denis Medical for additional episodes. The mockumentary was included in the fall lineup for the 2024-2025 TV season, so fans might be able to look forward to its return before the year ends instead of waiting until midseason during the 2025-2026 TV period.

With St. Denis Medical wrapping up this week, there’s now an opportunity for a double episode run of Night Court to conclude its third season. Unlike St. Denis, the fate of Night Court for the upcoming season remains undecided (either renewal or cancellation).
