ABC has acquired the television series prototype, “RJ Decker,” which is an adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s 1987 book titled “Double Whammy.
This one-hour pilot originates from writer and executive producer Rob Doherty, who’s joined by director and executive producer Paul McGuigan. Hiaasen also serves as an executive producer, alongside Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman of Timberman/Beverly Productions. The studio responsible is 20th Television.
The official logline for the series states:
As a reformed newspaper photographer with a tainted past, I find myself embarking on a fresh journey in the vibrant yet crime-ridden landscape of South Florida. My cases, varying from peculiar to downright eccentric, keep me on my toes. With the assistance of my former partner in journalism, her police detective spouse, and a mysterious benefactor who hails from my past, I navigate through this labyrinth of mystery. This enigmatic figure, a woman with secrets of her own, could either be my strongest ally or the key to my return to incarceration.
Most recently, efforts have been made to bring a Carl Hiaasen novel to television screens. At present, Apple TV+ airs “Bad Monkey,” a series featuring Vince Vaughn, produced by Bill Lawrence, which is based on the same-titled book by Hiaasen. This show was renewed for a second season in December. It has also been reported exclusively by EbMaster that Lawrence is working on adapting another Hiaasen novel, “Skinny Dip,” with Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis at Max.
Previously, Doherty developed the successful CBS series “Elementary,” where he held roles as both showrunner and executive producer. This program ran for seven seasons from 2012 to 2019, with Timberman and Beverly also serving as executive producers. Additionally, Doherty shared showrunning and executive producing duties on the CBS drama “Medium” featuring Patricia Arquette. Other notable works in his portfolio include “Dark Angel,” “Tru Calling,” and “Star Trek: Voyager.

This year, ABC initiated its first selection of pilots, deviating from their previous pattern of year-round development cycles instead of adhering to the conventional pilot season model. The network has already secured a series order for the upcoming season, specifically the spinoff “9-1-1: Nashville,” and is contemplating several other potential projects for pilot pickups.
