‘Abbott Elementary’ Sets Crossover Episode With ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’

As a seasoned TV enthusiast who has spent countless hours binge-watching shows set in Philadelphia, I must say that this crossover between “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is nothing short of a dream come true! The idea first sparked when I witnessed the infamous “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” disaster on social media, and I thought to myself, “This feels like an episode of Sunny, but it could also be an epic crossover!

The news is confirmed: “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” will indeed join forces for a crossover episode, as suggested by cryptic social media teasers from the main stars and creators of both shows, Quinta Brunson and Rob McElhenney.

McElhenney announced the news on a social media post, sharing a picture of himself, Charlie Day (from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), and Brunson standing outside the Warner Bros. studio for “Abbott” on their lot.

Additionally, McElhenney shared another photo on his Instagram Stories, featuring Danny DeVito from “Sunny,” Tyler James Williams of “Abbott” and William Stanford Davis as well:

Previously, McElhenney hinted on social platforms about a potential “Abbott”/”Sunny” merger, considering that both series are based in Philadelphia. While “Abbott” is manufactured by Warner Bros. TV, it airs on Disney’s ABC channel, unlike “Sunny,” which broadcasts on Disney’s FX network. This type of crossover, therefore, seemed feasible.

Initially, Brunson was tight-lipped about it, but during EbMaster’s “Awards Circuit Podcast earlier this summer, Brunson subtly suggested that something significant was in the pipeline. Without revealing details, she hinted at a major crossover event occurring and didn’t dismiss the idea when EbMaster mentioned “Sunny.” Brunson went on to say, “Deals have been made. I want you all to know that. I’m really excited for it.” She expressed her eagerness for this upcoming crossover with another project without disclosing its name.

As a devoted television enthusiast, I’m eager to infuse a fresh perspective into the medium we all cherish. The thrill of those monumental TV moments is something I’ve always admired and yearned for their return. Remember the exhilaration they brought? Well, with ‘Abbott’, I aim to contribute to preserving that spirit of enjoyable television. So, buckle up, folks! This ride is going to be a fun one.

The concept originated in February following McElhenney’s mention of the well-known “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” mishap that took place in Glasgow. Many people have remarked that this seems similar to an episode of Sunny, but McElhenney himself felt it was more like a crossover episode between @alwayssunnt and @AbbotElemABC. Later on Instagram, Brunson shared a screenshot of McElhenney’s post with the comment, “Just say the word @robmcelhenney. I adore you both.

Next Monday, ‘Abbott Elementary’ begins its fourth season at 9:30 PM on ABC. Meanwhile, ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ is busy brainstorming in the writers’ room, aiming to film its eight episodes for Season 17 this autumn.
