One significant query regarding “Stranger Things” season 5 revolves around which principal characters might perish, yet an unused concept for season 1 guarantees that a cherished character will live on. Although there are numerous unanswered questions and enigmas waiting to be resolved, the acclaimed series “Stranger Things” is set to conclude with its fifth season. The climactic finale of “Stranger Things” season 4 left fans on edge as Max (Sadie Sink) found herself in a coma following her confrontation with Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), the deadliest adversary the series has ever known.
In addition to this, Vecna’s scheme was initiated, leading to a devastating earthquake that split Hawkins wide open. This allowed the Upside Down to seep into our world. Vecna managed to escape and his location remains unknown, making the residents of Hawkins extremely vulnerable in season 5. Characters from Stranger Things are teetering on the edge of death as we approach the final season, but a leaked plan for season 1 hints at the survival of one of the show’s beloved characters: Jim Hopper (David Harbour).
David Harbour Wanting Hopper To Die In Stranger Things Season 1 Makes His Season 5 Survival More Likely
Luckily, Harbour’s Wish Wasn’t Granted
In an interview with GQ in April 2025, David Harbour shared insights about his Stranger Things journey, particularly bidding farewell to Jim Hopper after five seasons. Initially, Harbour doubted he’d advance this far in the series, assuming Hopper wouldn’t make it past the first season. It was quite possible that Stranger Things might not have continued beyond one season; however, fortunately, it turned out to be a massive success, extending its run for an unexpected five seasons, even surprising Harbour himself.
In his statement, Harbour mentioned that when he went through the scripts, he felt strongly that the season should conclude with Hopper taking his own life. This was, as he put it, the only means by which he could imagine Hopper offering an apology to his daughter Sara, who had passed away at the age of seven, prior to the events depicted in Stranger Things season 1. Fortunately, this didn’t occur, but one can’t deny that if the Duffer Brothers had chosen to do so, it would have been fitting for the first season.
Initially, Hopper came across as quite gruff due to the deep emotional turmoil he was experiencing following Sara’s demise. He was also disconnected from his own feelings. However, the series chose to rehabilitate and transform Hopper in season 1 by providing him with a fresh start through adopting Eleven and integrating him more into the Hawkins group. Consequently, it seems unlikely that Hopper will meet his end in Stranger Things season 5, as such an outcome wouldn’t sit well, regardless of the circumstances surrounding it, so he stands a stronger chance of surviving.
Stranger Things Season 3’s Fake-Out Hopper Death Is Another Reason He Can’t Die In Season 5
Stranger Things Already Made Us Believe Hopper Was Dead
In Stranger Things season 5, there’s a strong possibility that Hopper is still alive due to the fact that he previously experienced a staged death, which was quite impactful for the series. At the culmination of season 3, it appeared as though Hopper had given up his life in order to shut down the gate within the Russian laboratory hidden beneath Starcourt Mall. However, when Joyce rushed to where Hopper had last been seen, he was nowhere to be found. For quite some time, there was widespread belief that Hopper had perished, but this may not be the case.
In an unexpected twist for season 4 of “Stranger Things”, it was revealed that Chief Hopper had miraculously survived and was being held captive in Russia instead. As fate would have it, he managed to shield himself from the destructive ray and landed on a rescue platform, only to be discovered by Russian forces who took him into custody. The possibility of killing off Hopper in “Stranger Things” season 5 seems unlikely due to repetition, and if any major characters are set to meet their end in the final season, it doesn’t appear that Hopper will be among them, at least for now.
