Aaron Gordon’s blunt 2-word reaction to teammates’ NBA 2K rating

As a seasoned gamer with years of NBA 2K under my belt, I must say that Aaron Gordon’s opinion on Michael Porter Jr.’s rating feels spot-on. I’ve played with and against Porter Jr. in countless games, and his abilities on the virtual court are undeniably superior to an 83 rating.

Aaron Gordon recently shared his genuine opinions about Michael Porter Jr.’s NBA 2K25 ranking. Having been teammates with Porter Jr. for four seasons on the Denver Nuggets, they both achieved their first NBA championship in 2023 and played vital roles throughout their title run. Given these experiences together, Gordon recognizes Porter Jr.’s basketball talents and appreciates his contributions to the team.

It seems that 2K Games doesn’t share the same perspective. When NBA 2K25 launches, Porter Jr.’s starting overall rating will be 83, similar to his rating last year in NBA 2K24. The forward for the Denver Nuggets was given this initial ranking.

After Porter Jr.’s NBA 2K rating was announced, Gordon simply had two words to say about it:

“Too low”

Too low

Is Aaron Gordon right about Michael Porter Jr. deserving a higher rating?

Throughout his career with the Denver Nuggets, Michael Porter Jr. has proven to be a crucial component of the team. Although he hasn’t been selected for an All-Star game, Porter Jr. is undoubtedly among the league’s strongest role players at present. His consistent contributions to the Nuggets significantly contributed to Nikola Jokic leading the team to victory in 2023. However, the question remains: was his efficiency as impressive during the 2023-24 season?

Based on his stats, Porter Jr. scored an average of 16.7 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and dished out 1.5 assists. He had a 39.7% success rate from three-point range and an overall accuracy of 48.4%. Although his numbers are still strong, he seemed slightly less proficient in terms of shooting and scoring efficiency.

In the playoffs, the Nuggets couldn’t retain their championship as they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round. Throughout that series, Porter Jr.’s scoring contributions were inconsistent. As a player whose role primarily involves scoring points, his performances during this time weren’t particularly impressive. In Game 1, he scored 20 points, and in Game 3, he had 21 points. However, unfortunately, he failed to reach double-digit scores in the other five games. Consequently, his overall contribution to the team was lower compared to his performance during the 2023 NBA Playoffs.

Considering these circumstances, while Aaron Gordon may be correct in acknowledging Porter Jr.’s court skills, it appears that 2K Games is primarily evaluating him based on his performance during the previous season. In 2023, after their championship win, Porter Jr. was awarded an 83 rating. Remarkably, he retains this same rating despite experiencing a decline in his performance last season.

Even though NBA 2K initially sets player ratings, they tend to increase over the course of the season. Provided that Porter Jr. keeps demonstrating his skill on the court, his rating should follow suit and improve.
