A24's First Y2K Trailer Turns Our Machines Against Us Like They Were Supposed To

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating apocalyptic landscapes and battling rogue AI, the trailer for Y2K piqued my interest like nothing else has in a long time. The blend of humor and horror, set against the backdrop of the early 2000s, feels like a nostalgic punch to the gut – in the best possible way.

Imagine if one day, machines decided they didn’t need us humans anymore and plunged the world into a technological dark age, much like the doomsday predictions on New Year’s Day 2000. That’s the premise Kyle Mooney explores in his directorial debut titled “Y2K”, a gripping teen horror comedy that keeps you hooked till the end.

As a lifelong fan of music and movies, I’m particularly excited about this upcoming film featuring Jaeden Martell (It), Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), The Kid Laroi, and Fred Durst. Growing up in the early 2000s, Fred Durst was a staple of my teenage years, with his distinctive style and iconic red backwards baseball cap. This movie brings back memories of that era, and I can’t wait to see how these talented actors bring their characters to life on the big screen. The trailer subtly incorporates pre-2000 elements to establish its atmosphere before shifting to a combination of intense and humorous scenes. A potential groundbreaker is the concept of death by Tamagotchi. This year at South By Southwest, Y2K had its debut screening, garnering both mixed and favorable responses. It’s noteworthy as Mooney’s initial feature film effort. Besides his work on SNL, Mooney has also written the 2017 film Brigsby Bear, where he also starred, and created the adult animated series “Saturday Morning All Star Hits” in 2021, inspired by ’80s and ’90s cartoon programming blocks.

Collaboratively written by Mooney alongside video director Evan Winter, the movie titled “Y2K” has Jonah Hill joining as a producer. Set to hit theatres on December 6.
