A24 Sets Horror Movie ‘The Backrooms’ From 19-Year-Old Kane Parsons, Youngest Director in Studio’s History

I’m thrilled to pieces that my favorite studio, A24, has given the go-ahead for the chilling science-fiction horror flick “The Backrooms,” directed by the prodigious Kane Parsons! As a young whippersnapper of only 19 years, Parsons makes history as the youngest director ever at A24. Can’t wait to see what he cooks up in this eerie, mind-bending adventure!

Actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve will headline the cast for “The Backrooms.” While details about the storyline are being withheld, it’s based on the terrifying horror universe created by Parsons in his viral YouTube series. The series, consisting of various stories, premiered in 2022 and has garnered over 190 million views so far. Filming for the movie is set to begin this summer.

In this venture, Chernin Entertainment (a subsidiary of North Road Company) is teaming up financially with A24. The production companies involved are Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment, and 21 Laps Entertainment. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine will produce for 21 Laps Entertainment, while Chris Ferguson takes on the role for Oddfellows Pictures. James Wan and Michael Clear are producing under Wan’s Atomic Monster, with Judson Scott serving as executive producer and Alayna Glasthal overseeing the project for the company. Chris White initially brought the project to Atomic Monster and will also be involved as an executive producer.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of watching Chiwetel Ejiofor, an Oscar nominee for his role in “12 Years a Slave,” grace the screen recently. He was featured in the adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Life of Chuck,” titled “Venom: The Last Dance,” as well as “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.

Reinsve has gained notability through her role in Joachim Trier’s humorous romantic drama, “The Worst Person in the World,” which received two Oscar nominations. Additionally, she collaborated with A24 on the movie “A Different Man” featuring Sebastian Stan. Reinsve is represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and Narrative.

Upcoming releases from A24 feature a variety of intriguing titles. These include “Materialists,” a romantic drama directed by Celine Song, the critically acclaimed film “Sorry Baby” starring Eva Victor, Ari Aster’s Western entitled “Eddington,” Benny Safdie’s film inspired by MMA, titled “The Smashing Machine,” and Josh Safdie’s comedic take on ping pong, called “Marty Supreme.
