According to reports confirmed by EbMaster, A24 is closing its documentary filmmaking unit, resulting in the departure of five team members from that particular department.
Under the leadership of Nicole Stott, this division has recently created several documentaries such as “Gaze into My Eyes,” “The Final Mermaids,” “The Sixth” and Morgan Neville’s Steve Martin film titled “Steve!”.
Stott and Emily Osborne, the leader of documentary production, will stay with A24 for a sufficient amount of time to wrap up the current tasks they’re working on.
Projects that have been completed or are currently being produced, like “André Is an Idiot” and “Architecton,” will remain under the care of A24. This also applies to other ongoing projects, such as the wrestling documentary by the Philippou brothers titled “Deathmatch” and “The Yogurt Shop Murders.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but share some intriguing news. While it’s still on the table for us to collaborate with filmmakers on future documentaries, the current market conditions have made it tough to sustain an entire division, as my sources have hinted. It’s a challenging landscape we find ourselves in, but the passion for storytelling remains strong.
An unidentified documentarian voiced discontent over the decision, stating that it’s particularly significant for documentaries to receive backing from well-established firms during these critical times when they need support the most.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at the captivating documentaries A24 has produced in the past. For instance, the heart-wrenching “Amy,” which triumphed as the best documentary of 2016 and was even honored with an Oscar. More recently, they brought us the compelling Val Kilmer documentary titled “Val.”
Delving into other genres of non-fiction, A24 has also graced us with the insightful design docuseries “Home,” the enlightening “Stephen Curry: Underrated,” the profoundly moving “The Deepest Breath,” and Steve McQueen’s thought-provoking “Occupied City.” Each one of these films offers a unique perspective that resonates deeply with audiences.
This year, A24 boasts a number of narrative films in Cannes, such as “Eddington” by Ari Aster, “Highest 2 Lowest” directed by Spike Lee, and “Pillion,” the work of Harry Lighton.
A company well-recognized for its unique brand identity, A24, boasts thriving features and television divisions. However, the documentary sector has experienced tough times recently, as distributors show reluctance towards handling multiple politically and topical titles. Some filmmakers, in response, opt to distribute their own documentaries independently.
