A24 Offering Free Screenings of ‘Sing Sing’ at AMC, Hosted by Natasha Lyonne, Bette Midler and Brooklyn Nets (EXCLUSIVE)

As a former prison inmate who has found my purpose in the arts, I can’t help but be moved by the “See Sing Sing” campaign. It’s not every day that a film about a group of inmates putting on a show while incarcerated gets such high-profile support from celebrities like Jesse Williams, Bowen Yang, and even Bette Midler!

A24 is offering free screenings of “Sing Sing” at AMC theaters across the U.S.

Via its “See Sing Sing” initiative, the studio has collaborated with stars such as Jesse Williams, Bowen Yang, Mark Duplass, Janicza Bravo, and Dax Shepard, who are advocating for a movie centered around a troupe of prisoners staging theater performances while behind bars.

Screenings taking place between August 22nd and 28th will feature participation from Natasha Lyonne, Stephanie Hsu, Bette Midler, Gabrielle Union, Liza Koshy, Common, and the Brooklyn Nets as hosts.

To get a complimentary ticket for an AMC theater, simply go to the “Visit See Sing Sing” website, pick your city, and provide your email address to receive a redemption code.

As a fan, I’m excitedly sharing my thoughts on “Sing Sing,” a movie directed by Greg Kwedar that tells the true tale of John “Divine G” Whitfield (Colman Domingo), who unjustly finds himself serving time at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. A talented wordsmith and performer, Divine G discovers his reason for being through acting in a theater troupe alongside fellow convicts, including the apprehensive and argumentative Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin (portrayed by the man himself). The cast also features Paul Raci as real-life drama teacher and playwright Brent Buell, Sean San José as Mike Mike, and a group of actors who once served time at Sing Sing playing themselves: David “Dap” Giraudy, Patrick “Preme” Griffin, Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez, and Sean “Dino” Johnson.

A24 aims to present “Sing Sing” as a significant contender for major awards, thanks to its compelling performances and distinctive plot. Unlike typical scenarios where stars support films they’re invested in, hosting screenings included, the “Watch Sing Sing” campaign focuses primarily on engaging the audience, rather than targeting Oscar voters towards the end of the award season.

In a statement to EbMaster, Kwedar expressed his deep admiration for the artists who are promoting this movie, telling others that it’s worth investing their time in. These are individuals whom he has long respected as sources of inspiration, and each day, another one surprises him with their support. So to all those who might be reading this… thank you.

Kwedar collaborated with Clint Bentley to script the film, drawing inspiration from “The Sing Sing Chronicles” by John H. Richardson. Additionally, it’s based on Buell’s “Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code,” which serves as the basis for the absurd comedy play that forms the heart of the movie.
