A Windows Update Has Made Star Wars Outlaws, Avatar & Assassin's Creed Games Unplayable

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest saga unfolding with Star Wars Outlaws on Windows devices has left me more than a little frustrated. Having weathered countless bugs, glitches, and updates over the years, I’ve grown accustomed to the occasional hiccup in the gaming universe. However, this issue seems to be taking the cake (or perhaps the Death Star trench run).

Last week, when players started diving into Star Wars Outlaws after its Steam and Wild Card DLC releases, they encountered some troubles while playing the galactic action-adventure game. This issue predominantly affected PC gamers using Windows devices, as a recent Windows update has inadvertently hindered the ability to run Star Wars Outlaws on these systems.

According to Microsoft, problems with the Windows 11 version 24H2 update have been acknowledged. These issues surfaced a day after the release of the Steam and Wild Card DLC for Star Wars Outlaws, and we’re yet to receive any updates about their resolution.

After upgrading to Windows 11 version 24H2, you may experience problems with certain Ubisoft games. These games could potentially freeze when starting, loading, or while being played, and in some instances, users may see a blank screen instead. This information comes from a Microsoft post.

Microsoft has disclosed that Star Wars Outlaws is among the Ubisoft games affected by the Windows 11 version 24H2 update. Moreover, they’ve pinpointed a few additional titles, such as Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Origins, and Valhalla. Interestingly, Ubisoft had previously released a “temporary fix” for Outlaws in Title Update 1.4.0, which they added last week.

Microsoft clarified that they’ve implemented a restriction on devices running these specific games, doing so to ensure a smooth and secure “Windows update process. These devices will not receive an offer to install Windows 11, version 24H2, via the standard Windows Update channel.”

As a gamer using Windows, I’ve been warned against manually updating to version 24H2 via the Windows 11 Installation Assistant, or employing the Media Creation Tool until this issue gets resolved. If troubleshooting proves necessary, Microsoft has provided a workaround: open the Task Manager app, find either the Ubisoft launcher or the game, and end the task before restarting it.

Over the coming days, Microsoft is teaming up with Ubisoft to share updates about an ongoing issue affecting certain Ubisoft games. They will disclose further details as soon as possible. Moreover, they will notify players when a solution has been found, and we’ll post any new information on this page accordingly.
