The Switch 2 is selling faster than any previous Nintendo console, and Nintendo data shows that the majority of people buying a Switch 2 already owned an original Switch.
Nintendo recently shared that most people who bought the new Switch 2 also owned the original Switch. According to Nintendo’s data from September 30th, 84% of Switch 2 owners were previous Switch owners.
Nintendo’s report indicates that a large number of Nintendo Switch owners are upgrading to the new Nintendo Switch 2, demonstrating strong customer loyalty across different console generations.
Nintendo also shared an interesting bar graph in their report. It shows what percentage of people who originally owned the first Switch went on to buy the newer model, based on when they first got the original console.

Nintendo hasn’t shared specific numbers, but they say Switch owners are consistently upgrading to the new Nintendo Switch 2. However, people who bought the original Switch recently seem less interested in upgrading than those who bought it when it first came out.
Nintendo’s latest earnings report revealed the company is focusing its development efforts on the next Nintendo Switch, not surprisingly. They also plan to continue releasing movies based on their popular characters and games at a regular rate.
Nintendo has several exciting games on the way for the original Switch, like Rhythm Heaven Groove and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. A big advantage for players upgrading to the new Switch 2 is that almost all games from the original Switch will work on it. Nintendo has confirmed that many people are already enjoying their existing Switch games on the new hardware.
Nintendo reports selling over 10 million Switch 2 consoles by the end of September. The original Switch is also performing well, with sales numbers nearing those of the Nintendo DS, which remains the company’s all-time best-selling console – though that could change soon.
