A Tribute to Muntadhar al-Zaidi Won Late Night This Week

We’re skipping over James Acaster’s exceptional performance on Late Night With Seth Meyers this week, as my colleague Hershal Pandya has already done an excellent job of covering it. However, I do want to point out that Acaster’s performance wasn’t isolated; he refined those jokes in the arena of competition: British panel shows. It would be fantastic if there were a TV show where mid-level comedians could regularly showcase their humor and develop their chat-show skills. Acaster even co-hosted his own British panel show and has appeared on many of the U.K.’s biggest ones. Alas, it seems we have yet to find an equivalent program in the U.S. – it remains a puzzle! Nonetheless…

Another Significant Incident in the annals of Late-Night Television unfolded on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”. In this episode, Jimmy was allowed to don a Velcro suit – quite an impressive sight if you’re familiar with late-night television lore. I’ve been catching up on “The War for Late Night” via Libby before drifting off to sleep, just like everyone else does, and it really emphasizes how much Jimmy Kimmel admired David Letterman. The moment when Letterman stuck himself to that large wall using Velcro is one of those late-night events we’d show to extraterrestrials if they ever visit (a) our planet and (b) grow tired of, say, Mozart or similar classics. A hearty congratulations goes out to both Jimmy Kimmel and Lou Wilson for etching their names in the history books of late-night television.

It’s Rich-Dummy Summer

Ben Warheit and writer Matt Goldich effectively highlighted an intriguing perspective: Dickie Greenleaf from The Talented Mr. Ripley embodies the essence of summer. His saxophone prowess, his leisurely Amaro drinking, and the subtle hints of homosexuality that never veer into overt expressions – all exude a distinct “summer vibe.” Admittedly, not everyone appreciates this interpretation, but it’s merely a testament to the audience’s lack of understanding for the nuances of this portrayal. However, I do have two minor disagreements: When Richie Whitetail jumps into the pool, there should have been a dramatic splash of water that rendered the studio floor temporarily impassable for subsequent guests. Additionally, they ought to have allowed Seth Meyers to light his cigar and capture that moment as a GIF!

“It Was Such a Hard No”

Last week on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” brought a new focus on photo-releasing laws. A fascinating series of events unfolded, such as Ramy Youssef’s picture being mistakenly used as a stock photo in a frame Molly McNearney bought, and Ayo Edebiri expressing lifelong animosity towards the person who licensed her high-school yearbook photo for ABC broadcast. This week, we all gained some insight into the rules regarding when it’s acceptable or not to display an image on TV. For years, Kimmel has had a framed stock photo of Youssef in his home. “I showed it to my wife and suggested we hang up Jimmy’s picture,” Youssef said. “And she replied, ‘No.'” That seemed reasonable enough!

Cool Rebel Allison Williams

Initially, let’s talk about Allison Williams’ outfit on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. This week’s standout look for me! The chemistry between them was impeccable, and Williams skillfully promoted her project. Colbert even joked, “How is M3gan being M3gan this time?” In her own words, “Spoiler alert: She’s back.” What I found particularly endearing was Williams admitting a relatable quirk – she’s a stickler for rules. Almost as charmingly relatable as being clumsy in a romantic comedy!

Dr. Cole Escola on Late Night

Oh my, Mary’s presence on late-night television has been a blessing! It has inspired Cole Escola to come up with numerous creative outfits, and this week, they were dressed as a doctor. Escola seems to have graduated from xHamster’s medical school, which is just as impressive as the current head of the HHS. The gloves and socks matched perfectly, and I couldn’t help but notice. Escola made a post-Tony Awards victory lap on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” highlighting how significant it is that Broadway remains relevant on a national level, even though it’s confined to just a few blocks in one state. Conversations about theater might seem trivial, but they deserve to be broadcast loudly and proudly!

Dissecting the Everybody’s Live Boyfight on The Daily Show

In simple and engaging language: Two brilliant minds, John Mulaney and Jon Stewart, reminisced about their past antics on The Daily Show. A key topic was when Mulaney staged a fight with three teenagers in his Netflix show, which they discussed in detail along with the aftermath and its impact on toxic masculinity. Another subject of interest was the incident where a journalist threw shoes at George W. Bush, an event that Mulaney found particularly intriguing. He noticed that Bush seemed to have a certain expression suggesting he had dodged similar instances before. It’s always fascinating when late-night talk shows make you ponder, don’t you think?
