A Tiger Woods biopic is in the works.
It’s been announced that Amazon Studios, together with MGM, have purchased the rights to adapt Kevin Cook’s book “The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played” into a film. This upcoming movie will be helmed by director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who previously brought the story of Venus and Serena Williams’ rise to tennis stardom under their father’s tutelage in the movie “King Richard“.
The Higher Ground production company of ex-U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle are discussing a potential collaboration with experienced filmmaker Irwin Winkler, known for movies like “Rocky” and “Goodfellas”.
The story revolves around Woods’ journey, transforming from a gifted youngster into an exceptional golfer, culminating in his achievement of the Tiger Slam by clinching four back-to-back major golf tournaments between the years 2000 and 2001.
At 21 years old, the talented athlete achieved a monumental milestone when he clinched victory in the Masters tournament in 1997, setting an unprecedented record for the largest margin of triumph. This historic feat also made him the first African American golfer to secure one of the sport’s most prestigious awards.
After four years, the American golfer came back to Augusta National with the ambition of claiming a fourth consecutive major championship victory.
The book narrates the tale from various perspectives – Woods’ caddie, coach, role models, and competitors – as Tiger Woods pursued perfection amidst challenges that surfaced not only on the golf course but also off it.
The blend of Wood’s athletic prowess, tactical acumen, and bravery brought successes that some speculate may remain unmatched in the realm of sports.
Over the past few years, the professional golfer who’s won 15 major tournaments has faced numerous scandals and health issues related to injuries. The announcement about the biopic arrives following Woods’ disclosure that he underwent surgery on an injured Achilles tendon, a condition likely to keep him from participating in the Masters tournament next month.
49-year-old athlete shares on social media: “As I increased my personal workouts at home, I suddenly experienced a severe pain in my left heel, which was diagnosed as a ruptured Achilles tendon. This morning, Dr. Charlton Stucken from Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida performed a minimally invasive surgery to repair the damaged tendon. Now back home, I will be dedicating myself to recovery and rehabilitation. Thank you for all your support.
Actors Who Won Oscars For Their First Movie Roles
1. Julie Andrews
Prior to Julie Andrews making her mark on the big screen, she had amassed a significant amount of stage credits. It wasn’t until 1963, when Andrews was 27 years old, that she landed the role in Walt Disney Pictures’ “Mary Poppins”. The movie was released the following year to widespread critical praise and box office success. Andrews’ charming portrayal of the cherished nanny garnered her the Academy Award for Best Actress, and shortly thereafter, she was cast in Robert Wise’s “The Sound of Music”.
2. Barbra Streisand
Similarly to Andrews, Barbra Streisand had already gained some stage experience before transitioning to film acting. Following a series of TV appearances and several successful album releases in the 1960s, Streisand made her cinematic debut in the 1968 movie version of “Funny Girl” playing Fanny Brice. This was a character she had previously portrayed on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theater in 1964, and her performance received critical acclaim. Eventually, she won the Best Actress Oscar in 1968 for her role.
3. Timothy Hutton
1980 marked my debut in Hollywood when I landed the role of Conrad Jarrett, a troubled teenager, in Robert Redford’s movie, “Ordinary People.” After a stint at a psychiatric hospital due to an attempted suicide, Conrad struggles to reconnect with his aloof parents. At a tender age of 20, I made history by becoming the youngest actor to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1981. The years that followed brought numerous acting opportunities on both the big and small screens.
4. Anna Paquin
At just 11 years old, when most of us were juggling schoolwork, household chores, and extracurricular activities, I was standing on the stage at the Academy Awards, clutching an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for my role as Flora McGrath in the moving drama “The Piano.” Being the second-youngest Oscar winner in history, with Tatum O’Neal taking the youngest title for “Paper Moon,” I was well on my way to a remarkable acting career. As an adult, I’ve continued to thrive in the industry, spending four years as the mutant superheroine Rogue in the popular X-Men film series.
5. Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson initially ventured into show business as a contestant in Season 3 of ‘American Idol’, where she finished in seventh place. However, her most remarkable achievements were yet to unfold. The singer was offered her first film role as Effie White in the movie adaptation of the musical ‘Dreamgirls’. Sharing the screen with veterans such as Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles, and Eddie Murphy, Hudson secured the part over hundreds of other contenders. Her powerful performance caught the attention of critics, leading to a series of awards. Among these accolades were the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
6. Jo Van Fleet
Jo Van Fleet wasn’t new to the world of entertainment when she received her Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress; however, prior to this achievement, she hadn’t been featured in a movie. Interestingly, she had already won a Tony Award before Elia Kazan offered her a role in the film adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden.” Her stage prowess proved valuable on the big screen, and in 1956, Van Fleet was awarded an Oscar for her performance.
7. Tatum O’Neal
In the young age of merely 10 years, Tatum O’Neal became the youngest individual to receive an Academy Award. She played Addie Loggins in Peter Bogdanovich’s movie “Paper Moon,” opposite her father Ryan O’Neal. Her captivating performance quickly drew notice and ultimately led to her winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Subsequently, she took on the role of Amanda Wurlitzer in “The Bad News Bears” for her next film appearance.
8. Harold Russell
1947 marked the year when former soldier Harold Russell, who later became an actor, was awarded an Oscar for his role in the movie “The Best Years of Our Lives.” This was a significant achievement as Russell was the first non-professional actor to win an Academy Award. What made this even more remarkable is that he went on to win two Oscars for the same film – one being honorary, recognizing his contribution in bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans. It’s worth noting that Russell had lost both of his hands a few years prior to his debut acting role due to a military explosion. Interestingly, it took 34 years before he appeared in another movie.
9. Shirley Booth
In a manner similar to Jo Van Fleet, Shirley Booth had previously won a Tony Award before shifting her focus to films. However, unlike the earlier instance, she chose to reprise the role she had played on stage – Lola Delaney in ‘Come Back, Little Sheba’. Remarkably, this was not only her debut film appearance but also one of just five roles she would portray throughout her acting career. In due time, she garnered acclaim for her character as the live-in maid on the NBC sitcom ‘Hazel’, eventually earning Emmy Awards in 1964 and 1965.
10. Lupita Nyong’o
Prior to stepping into the limelight as a renowned actress, I myself was deeply immersed in the academic world. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in film and theater studies from Hampshire College, followed by a master’s degree at Yale School of Drama. Afterwards, I worked as a production assistant in Hollywood. At the age of 30, I filmed Steve McQueen’s period drama, “12 Years A Slave,” where I played the role of an enslaved woman named Patsey. Although my screen time was limited, it was impactful enough to earn me the prestigious Oscar for Best Supporting Actress the following year.
