Renowned Oscar-winning musician A.R. Rahman, known for his work in “Slumdog Millionaire,” has agreed to compose the music for the upcoming television series titled “Gandhi.” This project is helmed by director Hansal Mehta and produced by Applause Entertainment, a prominent Indian production company.
The declaration was shared on October 2nd, aligned with Gandhi’s Birthday Celebration, an annual event honoring Mahatma Gandhi in India.
The TV show is inspired by historian Ramchandra Guha’s books “Gandhi Before India” and “Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World, 1914-1948.” The first season delves into the early life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, tracing his journey from a law student in London to a lawyer and civil rights advocate in South Africa. It was during this period that he developed the ideas that eventually led India to freedom from British rule. Gandhi earned the title ‘Mahatma,’ or ‘great soul,’ for his significant role in the independence movement. The subsequent seasons will explore the remainder of his life.
This show marks the reunion of Applause, director Mehta, and actor Pratik Gandhi – not related to Mahatma Gandhi, who portrays Gandhi in it, following their successful collaboration on the SonyLIV series “Scam 1992: The Story of Harshad Mehta” (2020).
Applause Entertainment’s managing director, Sameer Nair, stated: “Gandhi” is not merely a TV series; it’s a worldwide account of the victory of the human spirit. The music by A.R. Rahman will add an emotionally profound layer to this legendary tale, making it relatable for viewers worldwide.
