‘A New Old Play’ Director Qiu Jiongjiong Sets Foodie Drama ‘Fuxi’ With Top Notch Asian Cast (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile and art enthusiast, I am absolutely captivated by the enigmatic journey of Chinese artist and filmmaker Qiu Jiongjiong. His unique perspective and approach to storytelling, as showcased in his upcoming film “Fuxi,” is not only intriguing but also incredibly refreshing.

Chinese artist and filmmaker Qiu Jiongjiong is now starting the production of “Fuxi”, which marks his second full-length movie after receiving recognition for his initial work in 2021 titled “A New Old Play.

In this movie, I delve deeper into Qiu’s unique approach of weaving history and folklore, using culinary experiences as a continuous thread. This narrative journey seamlessly blends myths, legends, books, and traditional stories.

A Fusion of ‘Food’ and ‘Joy’, this story unfolds within a circus tent, where an eclectic film crew is working tirelessly on a culinary film production. The narrative spans across four celebratory events, delving into a tale that intertwines the realms of life, death, and beyond, reaching even the far-reaching past.

Qiu has linked up with actors like Lee Kang-sheng (“Stranger Eyes” and numerous works by Tsai Ming-liang), Lee Hong-chi (“Love Is a Gun,” “Cities of Last Things”), Annie Chen, Darran Wang, and Fan Kuang-yao for this project.

The movie is currently arranged as a collaboration between Taiwan, France, and Japan, with Ding Ningyuan, who was previously an executive at the Hong Kong Asian Film Financing Forum (HAF) and a former producer at Ning Hao’s Dirty Monkeys Studios, and Zhao Jin being among the producers. Tang Tsai Yang and Jonathan Kim serve as executive producers in this project.

As a keen admirer of Chinese indie cinema, I’m intrigued by the dynamic nature of its marketplace. With each new production, the visionary producers strive to reintroduce their work within China once it’s been fully crafted. On the global stage, at present, there’s no sales agent representing this film.

The team is welcoming more foreign collaborators and plans to showcase their ongoing work at a significant film market in December. Earlier this year, during its development phase in March, the project was honored with the Project D Award at HAF.

In my opinion, as a movie buff, I’d like to share my thoughts on this unique cinematic journey that takes us through four distinct Sichuan-inspired tales:

Qiu expressed that as both the director and chef, he’s always passionate about discovering pure delight from simple, natural resources – ordinary life. For him, ordinary life embodies a blend of fairy tales infused with various tastes,” stated Qiu.

Qiu is a modern Chinese artist based on the mainland who has gained recognition both domestically and internationally for his work. He employs a style reminiscent of cinema in his art, having directed six independent documentaries and one solo fiction film titled “A New Old Play.” This film garnered the Special Jury Prize at the Locarno festival in 2021 and was also recognized as the best film at the Hong Kong International Film Festival’s Firebird (emerging filmmaker) competition in 2021. His films have been showcased at various prestigious venues, such as the Smithsonian Asian Art Museum in the U.S., the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Taipei Film Festival, and the Broadway Cinematheque in Hong Kong.

2025 will see the distribution of “A New Old Play” in Japan by Katsuben Cinema Club, in France by Carlotta Films, and across Southeast Asia by Cineaste Production House.

In the coming winter, a review of Qiu’s artistic pieces will be included in the Chinese Cinema Today 2024 exhibition, held simultaneously in Tokyo and Osaka. Additionally, seven of his movies have been carefully selected for streaming on Taiwan’s Giloo online video platform.
