Will “A Minecraft Movie” become the year’s first blockbuster to join the billion-dollar club?
The PG-rated movie adaptation of “Minecraft,” produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary, is rapidly approaching the billion-dollar mark at the box office. Following two weekends of release, it has amassed a staggering $550.6 million worldwide, with $269.6 million earned internationally and $281 million domestically. Currently, it stands as the highest-grossing film of 2023, surpassing Disney and Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” which has made $410 million globally after nine weeks in theaters.
Over the weekend, “A Minecraft Movie” earned an additional $79.6 million in 76 international markets, experiencing a 45% drop compared to its initial overseas release. Key countries contributing to this earnings include the United Kingdom (with $39.8 million), China ($20.3 million), Germany ($18.9 million) and Mexico ($18.7 million).

As a movie critic, I was thoroughly captivated by the gripping vigilante thriller, “The Amateur,” co-produced by Disney and 20th Century Studios. In its debut across 52 territories, it generated a robust opening of $17.2 million, with France leading the way at $1.6 million. The United Kingdom and Mexico followed closely behind with impressive earnings of $1.4 million each.
In North America, “The Amateur” made its grand entrance with an initial take of $15 million, contributing to a global launch of $32.2 million. These figures surpassed my expectations, but given the production budget of $60 million, this film needs to demonstrate staying power to validate its costs. Rami Malek delivers a compelling performance as a vengeful CIA analyst on a mission to track down the terrorists who took the life of his wife. Catch “The Amateur” in theaters now and see if it can maintain its momentum.
In its international premiere, the horror film “Drop,” produced by Universal and Blumhouse, fell short, earning only $2 million across 47 countries. However, it saw slightly better attendance in North America, grossing $7.7 million, pushing its global total to $10 million. Fortunately for the producers, the movie has generally positive reviews and was made for just $11 million, making it financially viable with minimal success. The film stars Meghann Fahy, who gained prominence in “The White Lotus,” as Violet, a widowed mother who starts receiving ominous and sinister phone calls during her first date with a man named Henry (Brandon Sklenar, known for his role in “It Ends With Us”).
