A Major Death Just Happened On 9-1-1. Angela Bassett Actually Thought She’d Go First

Warning! The story I’m about to share has a major twist revealed in the April 17 episode of ‘9-1-1’, titled “Lab Rats”. If you haven’t watched it yet, I strongly recommend catching up on your Hulu subscription before we dive in!

It seems that fans of the show 9-1-1 may still be grappling with the shock of a major character’s death from the latest episode scheduled for 2025. Even though Ryan Murphy’s characters often encounter perilous situations, few would have anticipated the demise of original cast member Peter Krause’s character Bobby. In fact, Angela Bassett was so certain that her character Athena would be the one to meet her end, she was taken aback when informed otherwise.

In the finale of the two-part “Contagion” event in the series, the heartbreaking death of the fire captain occurred. Showrunner Tim Minear informed Angela Bassett and Peter Krause that their characters, Athena and Bobby Nash respectively, would experience the loss of Athena’s husband, which came as a surprise, as Bassett stated to THR.

I was the one he initially approached and informed, then he reached out to me next. He said something like, “Angela, brace yourself for a major twist in this season! We need to create quite a stir, and someone will meet an untimely end.” Of course, there was a moment of suspenseful silence before I blurted, “Is it… Athena? Or is it me?

Considering the numerous hardships Athena Grant-Nash has faced recently – such as the Season 7 cruise ship predicament, both her and Bobby narrowly escaping a house fire, and the current plane crisis – it’s understandable why Angela Bassett might worry about Athena.

Despite Tim Minear assuring her that Athena was safe, the Emmy-winning actress failed to entertain doubts about losing her on-screen partner. Instead, she carried on.

Initially, I began checking the names off: ‘Is it Hen? Is it Chimney?’ Then, after a few options, I exclaimed in disbelief – it was almost unthinkable to me it was Bobby. It left me speechless; a moment where words failed me because our relationship had been so meaningful and robust over the past four or five years. I never expected that twist. None of us did.

It’s equally applicable to Kenneth Choi, known as Chimney, who wept profusely upon witnessing Bobby’s demise, even though he was present when it was filmed. I imagine this is a challenging moment for not just the actors, their characters, but also the viewers, and it will be intriguing to find out how Athena manages, along with everyone who relied on him at the 118.

I think this should serve as a warning to fans, though, that no one is safe.

In the opening of Season 8, after the aircraft crisis caused by a mid-air collision that left Athena in control, showrunner Tim Minear eased our concerns about Athena and Bobby’s safety, stating, “For Bobby and Athena, they can take a moment to relax,” before directing our attention to the challenges facing Eddie (Ryan Guzman).

The long-awaited sigh of relief has finally subsided, giving us a brief respite for processing our grief over this loss. We’ll reconnect with Athena in about a week or two when the series 9-1-1 comes back on air at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, May 1st, on ABC.
