As a seasoned viewer of this captivating series, I must say that episode X has left me somewhat perplexed. On one hand, the intrigue surrounding Pippa and Ravi’s investigation into Becca Bell’s case is undeniably thrilling, but on the other, the constant twists and turns are becoming a tad exhausting.
Pippa Fitz-Amobi is more comfortable at home than on the dance floor. Her character, as depicted in the show, is labeled as ‘a good girl.’ However, to unravel the mystery surrounding Andie Bell, Pippa must join her friends at a chaotic party, which seems quite perilous. As the pulsating rhythm of “Sail” by AWOLNATION kicks in and the strobe lights flash wildly, it’s clear that this investigation is about to take an unexpected turn for the worst.
A “Calamity” in this context appears to be a unique term used by Little Kilton for a rave or wild party, as described by Max Hastings as being intense, lively, chaotic, and fun. So, if someone asks you what a Calamity is, you can explain that it’s essentially a vibrant, rowdy, and unconventional gathering, sometimes colloquially referred to as “Calamity parties” or simply “Calamities.” These events are legendary and tend to be quite exclusive.
In this scenario, we uncover another small enigma within the larger one. If Pippa’s creative circle of friends decides to join in the upcoming chaos, they need to discover the location and time of the event. This is actually the first selfless act by Pip, as her friends enjoy socializing but haven’t ventured into the world of calamities before. Both Cara and Lauren are excited to witness the commotion, particularly since their crushes, Ruby and Ant, will most likely be present at the gathering.
Following some time spent in the library, discovering some rather awkward hashtags (one might wonder who would employ #calamityparty), and receiving a bit of guidance from Mr. Ward – it’s worth mentioning he’s an English teacher at our school – the girls finally solve the mystery. The evening falls on Saturday, a clandestine location in the woods awaits, and a rendezvous with fate is scheduled.
As a former high school student myself, I can vividly recall the excitement and anticipation that came with getting ready for a big party with friends. In my day, we didn’t have social media or influencers to guide us through the process, but we still had our own versions of “seminal high-school makeovers.” The transformation was often a collaborative effort between friends, as they helped each other navigate the complex world of fashion and makeup.
As a woman who has spent years fighting for gender equality and breaking down societal norms, I am deeply disappointed by the decision of Ravi to decline Pippa’s invite to the party. It seems that he is content with perpetuating the same old stereotypes and expectations for women in society. If he truly values feminism and progress, he should understand the importance of embracing change and accepting people for who they are, regardless of how they choose to present themselves.
At the party with Lauren and Cara on the way, Pippa rehearses her drink order: “I’d like one piña colada, please!” However, she’s taken aback when she realizes that the event isn’t being hosted at a piña colada-serving venue. As it turns out, the location seems more like an intricate club, disguised in what looks like an old, repurposed cave. Admittedly, it’s quite surreal; Euphoria does have its fantastical moments, and this party in a supposed cave-turned-club is one of them.
Indeed, it’s not just a spectacle, but a visual delight as well. It’s undoubtedly the most thrilling event in the series for Pip up until now. A pity that Ravi isn’t present to share this moment with him.
In a game that appears to blend elements of Spin the Bottle and Seven Minutes in Heaven, Pip decides to participate, hoping it would provide her with information about Andie’s drug-dealing associate. Surrounded by several individuals partaking in lines of white powder, she braces herself when the spinning bottle points to Pippa. Fearing the consequences, she consents and is led into an eerily abandoned room reminiscent of the Upside Down. Rather than engaging in a kiss, she requests drugs instead. He guides her towards Howie, the on-site dealer.
As a seasoned investigative journalist with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of dismay and concern when I come across stories like these. The actions of Pippa, a fellow reporter, are questionable at best, and potentially damaging to her professional reputation. Bribing sources for information is not only unethical but also illegal in many jurisdictions. While it may seem like a quick fix to get the scoop on a story, the long-term consequences can be severe.
So far, this episode had been one of the most thrilling we’ve seen. The tension and anticipation were building up, but when Pip left the party, all that promise seemed to vanish. I thought the chaos was about to unfold over the entire episode, but it turned out to be barely more than ten minutes long. To my surprise, there was a lot of build-up leading to the chaos, yet the actual event itself felt underdeveloped, which is quite unfortunate.
Towards the end of the evening, Ravi and Pippa exchange a phone conversation reminiscent of “When Harry Met Sally…” that helps steer the situation in a positive direction. Ravi manages to calm Pip by explaining his video game scenario and expresses regret for not being present during the recent mishap. “We’re a team,” he reassures her. In return, Pip vows to fill him in on all that happened at the party the following day. A post-event discussion, or debrief, is crucial in maintaining a healthy relationship as it shows their bond is strengthening.
However, it seems like Becca Bell, Andie’s younger sister, can’t help but meddle in Pippa’s affairs, even though one could argue that Pip isn’t the only one doing so. In town, Becca confronts Pip and pleads with her to halt her investigation. This isn’t a matter Pippa brushes off casually. Instead of meeting up at Ravi’s bar as planned, Pip opts out and contacts Cara instead, considering her a more reliable source.
Ravi was left waiting alone at the bar, as Pip failed to show up. People everywhere felt a pang of sadness as Ravi idly fidgeted, anticipating the highlight of his day – their conversation. Ravi had even prepared a special, non-alcoholic drink for Pip, which he affectionately called a “Pip-tini”. Ladies, if he doesn’t create a unique version of this cocktail just for you, it’s time to reconsider your relationship with him!
When Pippa arrives home, not only does her mom scold her for spending time with Ravi, but it appears she’s being pushed too far about the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) subject matter. For a moment, it seems like Pip might comply, considering her tiring weekend. However, any obstacle is merely a fresh opportunity for Pippa. A toy rabbit with a hidden phone has been nagging her thoughts. Moreover, Leanne only asked Pip to choose a different EPQ topic, not to abandon the project entirely.
Essentially, our journey led us to find out that Pip was inevitably going to resume her case, despite standing up Ravi and facing a stern lecture from her mom. The introduction of Becca Bell’s anger seems justified, but the build-up only to have Pip deliberate over her EPQ felt frustrating—I would have preferred to invest an additional ten minutes in the initial chaos rather than witnessing Pip’s back-and-forth. This episode offered fresh, intriguing, and captivating elements primarily from the calamity, so it’s disappointing that we didn’t delve deeper into it.
As a cinephile, let me share my take on this intriguing tale: I’m back to the grind, partner! Pip whispers an invitation for us, Ravi and me, to sneak into the Bell family’s abode, search for that toy bunny, and lift the burner phone. For the most part, we pull it off smoothly. We find the bunny alright, but instead of a phone, it’s filled with some suspicious substances – a fact that supports Howie’s earlier claims.
As we move past the halfway mark of the season, Pippa is now able to adopt her rebellious persona more freely. Following their mischievous act of law-breaking, both Pippa and Ravi exit the situation with laughter in their hearts. What’s more, Pippa skipped school to join Ravi in this escapade, turning them into a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde duo.
Ring a Bell?
“Cara thinks Pip’s wish to attend the party might originate from her fixation on Sal and Andie.”
Regarding Cara, she dances and shares a kiss with Ruby amidst the chaos. However, her concerns for Pip soon arise, preventing things from going any further. Yet, luckily, what Pip did eventually turned out to be beneficial for their friendship.
As I, the movie critic, find myself back at the Bell residence, I’m not stealthily sneaking in solo this time – Becca’s accompanied by none other than Dan da Silva. It seems he has a knack for showing up everywhere!
In this scenario, Ravi and Pip debate over who plays the role of Sherlock and who plays Watson in their favorite show. It might seem logical that Pip, being the main character, would be Sherlock. However, Ravi presents a compelling argument that makes me change my mind: Pip strongly resembles Martin Freeman, suggesting she is indeed Watson. I’m convinced.
