A remake of a classic Clint Eastwood Western is planned, and one actor is emerging as a strong contender for the lead role, especially after being cast in an upcoming DC Universe show.
It’s often disheartening when studios decide to remake truly great movies, especially ones that were already perfectly made. What’s even more surprising is that despite knowing a remake will likely fall short, it’s hard not to secretly hope it can live up to the original’s reputation.
Remakes often disappoint compared to the films they’re based on, so it’s wise to be cautiously hopeful about the new version of this Clint Eastwood classic. However, if the filmmakers choose the right actors, this remake could be one of the rare exceptions and actually be worth making.
Rebel Ridge & Lanterns Can Be Perfect Stepping Stones For Aaron Pierre To Lead Fistful Of Dollars’ Remake
Early in his career, Aaron Pierre appeared in many different kinds of films. Now, he’s becoming known for his work in Neo-Westerns, including the movie Rebel Ridge and the DCU show Lanterns. Similar to classic Western heroes, Pierre often plays characters who are powerfully silent – he conveys a lot through his presence and doesn’t need many words.
It’s still too early to know how the series Lanterns will be received, but based on Pierre’s work in the show’s trailer and in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, he clearly has the depth and presence to convincingly play the Stranger.
Pierre has demonstrated his ability to play characters who enter towns divided by feuding families and skillfully control the situation, as seen in his roles as John Stewart in Lanterns and Terry Richmond in Rebel Ridge.
At nearly 6 feet 3 inches tall, Aaron Pierre has a naturally commanding presence, making him ideal for portraying a strong and silent Western gunslinger. He excels at showing how his characters earn respect through strength of character rather than aggression, which is a key reason he’d be perfect to star in a remake of A Fistful of Dollars.
Remakes need a strong justification. If a remake closely mirrors the original, it invites unfavorable comparisons. But if it deviates too much, it questions whether it’s a legitimate remake at all. The new version of A Fistful of Dollars, starring Aaron Pierre, aims to find a balance – being different enough to stand on its own, but still honoring the spirit of the original.
Even if Aaron Pierre doesn’t land the role in that new Western they’re making, I truly believe he’s going places. He’s got a real future ahead of him, that’s for sure.
The Clint Eastwood Western’s Remake Can Be Tricky, But It Might Actually Work
The announcement of a remake for A Fistful of Dollars is met with confusion – the original film remains a classic. Sergio Leone’s 1964 film not only created the Spaghetti Western genre, but also launched Clint Eastwood’s career. It’s hard to understand why anyone would attempt to remake something so iconic and well-regarded when the original still holds up so well.
However, given that A Fistful of Dollars was originally based on Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, the concept of reinterpreting stories is central to its history. If that film could so successfully reimagine an existing masterpiece, why shouldn’t another remake be able to do the same?
Updating the classic Clint Eastwood Western for today’s audiences could really take advantage of new filmmaking technology. While keeping Ennio Morricone’s unforgettable music, we could now film the stunning landscapes of the Tabernas Desert with incredible detail using modern 65mm digital cameras.
If the new version of the Clint Eastwood Western finds a strong lead actor, it could justify its existence and perhaps even become a continuing film series. Many are hoping Aaron Pierre, after his work in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge and the DCU’s Lanterns, will be considered for the part.
