A Decades-Old Nintendo Easter Egg Has Surfaced In Mario Kart World

Hey there fellow gaming enthusiasts! You know that little tune, just 19 notes, that seems to pop up everywhere in Nintendo games? It’s called Totaka’s Song, and it’s the work of composer Kazumi Totaka who sneaks it into every project he touches. From Animal Crossing where K.K. Slider sang it to a villager, to Luigi’s Mansion and Pikmin 2 where you hear it if you linger too long on the menu screen, this tune has been around. And now, I’ve just discovered it in Mario Kart World – making it the 25th time this melody has been found hidden in a Nintendo game! It’s like an Easter egg hunt for tunes, and I can’t wait to see where else it shows up!

According to VGC, a Reddit user named “charizardtelephone” discovered a hidden melody in the newest version of Mario Kart. When you position the cursor over Yoshi and leave it there, this adorable dinosaur begins to softly play a well-known song.

In previous Mario Kart games, this song has been played before and it’s not new that Yoshi is the one performing it. For instance, in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, when your kart gets near a spectating Yoshi during the race, you will hear Yoshi singing the melody. Interestingly, Shirow Masamitsu, who voices Yoshi since the release of Yoshi’s Story in 1998, has given the voice for this song.

Initially featured in X (a game launched in 1990 for Game Boy), the tune known as Totaka’s Song subsequently showed up in Mario Paint in 1992. This melody has since surfaced in approximately 25 distinct games across various franchises such as Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and Yoshi. Its latest rendition prior to this was found in the 2020 version of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, where players could ask K.K. Slider to perform “K.K. Song.”
