A Beloved Roguelike Shooter Just Received Its First Major Update In Almost Eight Years

For the first time since November 2017, Vlambeer has rolled out an extensive update for Nuclear Throne. This update includes support for higher frame rates (60/120fps), a revamped controls menu, and multiple aspect ratios. At present, these features are accessible in the beta version of the roguelike shooter, with plans to make them available to all users in due course.

The latest beta version of Nuclear Throne, a top-down shooter, was unveiled on Steam, complete with instructions on how to access its beta phase. It’s worth noting that these updates will eventually reach all players. Developer Vlambeer assures us they’ll be incorporating these improvements and more into the main game. Interestingly, in a subsequent comment, Vlambeer mentioned that there are physical editions of Nuclear Throne available for Switch. This might suggest a possible update for the Switch 2, enhancing the game to run at 120fps on the hybrid system.

At present, Nuclear Throne is accessible on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch (it debuted in 2019). Initially, the game began as a Steam Early Access title in 2013 before its full release towards the end of 2015. The latest beta build updates could hint at potential versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, although Vlambeer has yet to make an official announcement.

The long gap between updates for Nuclear Throne might be due to the studio having closed down in 2020 after a decade. However, Vlambeer, the company, resumed operations about a year ago when co-founder Jan Willem Nijman purchased the name outright. According to The Verge, Nijman’s goal with this new phase of the company is to maintain the classic games from Vlambeer and ensure they remain playable in the future. Besides Nuclear Throne, Vlambeer is recognized for other popular titles such as Ridiculous Fishing, and they are currently working on Ultrabugs.
