Austin Butler’s Recent R-Rated Western Is Now A Charts-Topping Streaming Smash After $13M Box Office Flop

Austin Butler stars in A24’s recently released and somewhat controversial film, Eddington, which is now becoming popular on streaming platforms. Directed by Ari Aster, Eddington is a dark comedy and neo-Western taking place in a made-up New Mexico town in May 2020. The story centers around a tense conflict between the sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and the mayor (Pedro Pascal) regarding COVID-19 rules and other local issues.

Glenn Howerton plays Vernon Jefferson Peak, the leader of a conspiracy-based group similar to QAnon, who attracts Louise (Emma Stone), the sheriff’s wife. Louise is struggling with depression and is searching for purpose and connection. While some reviewers, like those at Eddington, praise the film for capturing the anxious mood of the pandemic, overall reactions from critics and audiences are mixed, giving it a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the disappointing box office performance of Eddington – it earned just $13.1 million globally against a $25 million budget, according to The Numbers – A24 had a successful summer overall. The studio saw strong results with the popular romantic comedy Materialists and the critically acclaimed dramedy Sorry, Baby.

According to data from FlixPatrol, Eddington is currently the most popular movie on HBO Max as of today, November 18th. It’s not surprising that more people are watching it now that it’s available to stream – this often happens with movies that didn’t do well in theaters, particularly those featuring well-known actors and filmmakers.

It’s worth checking out Eddington just to see how its ambitious idea plays out, and it features some well-known actors. Several of them, like Pedro Pascal (Materialists), Emma Stone (Bugonia), and Austin Butler (Caught Stealing), have recently starred in more popular and critically acclaimed films.

Currently, the show Eddington is popular mainly in the United States. While Weapons is still the most-watched movie globally on HBO Max, Eddington hasn’t cracked the top 10. The show’s story focuses on a pandemic experience that resonates particularly well with American viewers.

While “Eddington” might gain a dedicated following over time, it probably won’t receive any awards this season. It’s an unusual film that effectively captures the spirit of its time and place, which appeals to some viewers, even if it doesn’t achieve widespread popularity.
