Disney is giving us a live-action remake of Moana, and the first sneak peek is here! Catherine Laga’aia stars as the Polynesian princess, performing the popular song “How Far I’ll Go.” Dwayne Johnson is also back as Maui, complete with his magical fishhook. While we don’t get a lengthy view of him, we do see him briefly before he transforms into an eagle – a necessary form for his quest to restore the heart of Te Fiti, just as in the original story.
The upcoming live-action remake of Moana retells the beloved story of Moana’s quest to save her island, aided by the demigod Maui. The original cast returns with John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Rena Owen playing Moana’s father, mother, and grandmother, respectively. Interestingly, Alan Tudyk won’t be voicing HeiHei this time around. He explained to Gold Derby that people often mistake HeiHei for a chicken when he’s actually a rooster, so they’ve cast a female actress to bring more personality to the role. Directed by Thomas Kail and written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller – the same writers as Moana 2 – the remake is set to release on July 10, 2026.
