„Of all the games, just not Anno!” Ubisoft explains the headless senator, after he was spotted in Anno 117

Anno 117 is the first Ubisoft game to mention the use of AI in its Steam description. The developers want players to know the game is ultimately the result of their team’s work and creativity. However, some players haven’t been impressed with the final product, pointing out issues like characters appearing without heads.

Generative AI in Anno 117

I was scrolling through Reddit the other day and saw a lot of people talking about how weird the banquet scene looks in Anno 117. Seriously, it’s pretty rough! They were pointing out all sorts of things – some of the characters are super blurry, and there are even hands and faces that are cut off or totally distorted. It’s just… not great, honestly.

Kotaku spotted the same issue and found another image with Roman senators. Surprisingly, one of the senators was created without a head! However, the article also includes Ubisoft’s explanation of the banquet image and shows the corrected version.

You may have briefly seen a temporary image instead of the final artwork. We’ve now attached the correct image, which will be included in the upcoming 1.3 patch. As our most expansive Anno game yet, Anno 117: Pax Romana required a larger art team than ever before. To help with the scale of the project, the artists used AI tools for initial designs and experimentation. However, every detail in the final game is a result of their skill, artistry, and creative ideas.

The updated image is a little improved, but it seems like some of the poorly made AI parts were just softened, which isn’t a very clever fix.

Fans aren’t happy

The new image disappointed many fans. Players have noted that earlier games in the series had much better graphics, and Pax Romana doesn’t measure up. Some people are even saying they won’t purchase the game because it uses AI-generated art. Negative reviews on Steam are also appearing, specifically criticizing this use of AI technology.

Thanks to your post, I’ve decided to hold off on buying this game. It seems the graphics were largely created using AI, and the quality just doesn’t compare to what we saw in the previous version. If the developers are cutting corners like this, I’ll wait for the game to be discounted before considering a purchase.

Seriously, of all the video games, it just had to be Anno! What initially attracted me to Anno 1800 was how stunning it looked.

Gamers are wondering if Ubisoft used artificial intelligence to translate the text in their latest game. One player noticed that the German version of the game is missing established terms from previous installments of the Anno series, specifically in the Pax Romana expansion. They shared several examples, noting that the new wording feels strange and doesn’t fit with the game’s existing language.
