Sony Pictures is starting to develop a movie based on the popular Labubu monster dolls. They’ve obtained the rights to the brand and are in the early stages of planning the film, but haven’t announced who will be involved or what kind of movie it will be yet.
Sony developing a Labubu dolls movie
Sony is developing a movie based on the popular Labubu dolls, continuing the studio’s trend of turning toys into films.
The studio has bought the rights to adapt the property into a movie, and they’re considering building a whole series around it. However, the project is in its very early stages – they haven’t hired a director, writers, or any other creative personnel yet. They’re also still deciding whether to make it a live-action film or an animated one (according to The Hollywood Reporter).
Labubu first appeared in 2015 as a creation of artist Kasing Lung, part of his ‘The Monsters’ series. Initially made by How2Work, the dolls began being manufactured by Pop Mart, a Chinese retailer, in 2019.
Pop Mart made its toys popular by selling them in ‘blind boxes’ – packages where you don’t know which collectible figure is inside until you open it. This created a lot of excitement and led to a thriving resale market, where rare, limited-edition figures can sell for very high prices.
The brand initially became popular in East and Southeast Asia, and then spread to other countries, including the United States. Its visibility increased significantly when celebrities, particularly Blackpink’s Lisa, started carrying the dolls as fashion items. Financial reports from 2024 and early 2025 show the line has led to a large increase in the company’s revenue.
Sony hasn’t officially said anything about the deal. The project is still in its initial stages, and we can expect more information as Sony takes the lead creatively.
