In addition to bringing back Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Peacemaker Season 2 connected to the world of Superman with a surprise appearance by Lex Luthor during Flag’s prison visit. Although Nicholas Hoult only played Luthor once in the HBO Max series, some of his followers reappeared in the final episodes, including Sydney Happersen, played by Stephen Blackehart. Initially, it wasn’t clear why Happersen would help Rick Flag Sr., but Blackehart recently explained the reason in an interview.
The actor discussed this during an interview with Brandon Davis, host of Phase Hero. Bonnie Discepolo, who played Ali Jessop in Peacemaker, was also present. When Davis asked if Blackehart’s character, Happersen, followed Flag’s orders to find dimensional rifts out of fear of Lex Luthor’s punishment or disapproval, Blackehart responded by saying he’d seen a discussion about the same question on Reddit, and then continued with his thoughts.
I’m really surprised to see Lex working with Flag, especially considering their history. I look up to Lex – he’s both a friend and someone I admire, like everyone at LuthorCorp. I definitely wouldn’t want him saying things that could mislead my friend or cause trouble between them.

The reveal of a Nazi-themed Earth in Peacemaker Season 2 was a huge surprise, and I recently discovered a fascinating detail about the Hitler mural featured in that scene.
James Gunn recently responded to criticism about the Peacemaker season 2 finale, and his answer was surprisingly honest and straightforward.
Lex Luthor is known for being ruthless and would likely harm someone who disobeyed him, but that wasn’t the situation with Sydney Happersen. Happersen was worried about disappointing Luthor if Rick Flag Sr. revealed he wasn’t cooperating. He still respects Luthor’s opinion enough to not want to upset him.
Sydney Happersen helped Rick Flag Sr. for a second reason: he felt obligated to locate another dimensional rift. He and his team at LuthorCorp had previously opened one – as depicted in Superman – that almost leveled Metropolis. Stephen Blackehart clarified this by saying:
It’s also revealed that portals exist. When my character appears, it’s partly because of guilt. Sydney is worried about the rifts – he wonders if there are any leftover from their past actions, and if he’d be to blame. But then it turns out to be a full-blown portal, which is something completely different.

HBO Max subscriptions begin at $10.99 per month. In addition to the show Peacemaker, you’ll have access to a wide variety of DC content, plus thousands of other movies, shows, documentaries, and more. See the deal here.
That’s right. The portals created by Lex Luthor’s technology were unstable and only stayed open briefly, but the one opened by John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith, was different. It was created using alien technology, making it a stable gateway to the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. Despite this new development, Blackehart stressed the need to ensure Lex Luthor didn’t misunderstand Sydney Happersen’s role, and continued speaking…
I’m dealing with a lot right now, mainly the shock that these people are working together. I know Lex won’t hurt me, but I also don’t want to betray my friend. It’s like, you wouldn’t want someone falsely accusing you of being with someone else’s partner – it’s a terrible feeling, even if it’s not true.
Stephen Blackehart ended that part of the discussion by pointing out that the biggest mistake Lex Luthor could make with Sydney would be to simply ignore him. Despite Luthor’s claims of wanting to help humanity, he’s really motivated by his own pride and ego, which fuels his dislike of Superman. Because of this, I don’t think Luthor sees Sydney as a friend, but rather as someone he can use to get what he wants. It’s a completely unequal relationship.
Sydney Happersen and her colleagues at LuthorCorp, including Ali Jessop and Otis Berg, benefited greatly from their work for Rick Flag Sr. and Lex Luthor. They received valuable perks while exploring alternate dimensions for A.R.G.U.S. (Sydney’s benefits even included cocaine), and ultimately discovered Salvation – a dimension now intended to house metahuman prisoners. With Season 3 of Peacemaker currently unconfirmed, fans hope to see Sydney’s story continue in Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.
