Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the first season of Last Samurai Standing! Michihito Fujii, the creator of the Netflix series, has revealed plans for the show to continue beyond its shocking ending. Set in 1878 Japan, Last Samurai Standing follows 292 samurai competing in a dangerous race to Tokyo, with a massive 100 billion yen prize at stake. Critics have praised the show, drawing comparisons to the hit series Squid Game.
Fujii recently told ScreenRant’s Joe Deckelmeier that he envisions Last Samurai Standing continuing for multiple seasons. Knowing that streaming shows often have long gaps between seasons, he’s focused on packing as much story as possible into the first season.
ScreenRant: In a perfect world, how many seasons would you like to tell this full story?
Michihito Fujii prefers to keep seasons relatively short – around two or three – because viewers can lose track of details if there’s a long gap between seasons. As a Netflix fan, he aims to pack as much story as possible into each season. Ultimately, his goal is to tell the complete story within another season, if possible.
The first season of Last Samurai Standing concluded with a violent showdown where Shujiro defeated Bukotsu. As the season ended, Shujiro and Futaba were traveling to Tokyo, intent on thwarting a plot by Kawaji to destabilize the government. The finale also suggested that Kyojin might be changing sides, a storyline the series could explore further.
Currently, Netflix hasn’t announced plans for a second season of Last Samurai Standing, but the creator, Fujii, has ideas for future storylines. The show just launched on November 13, 2025, so it’s too early to tell if it will be popular enough to warrant another season.
Fortunately, the series has a foundation to build on: Last Samurai Standing is adapted from the continuing manga series of the same name, created by writer Shogo Imamura and artist Katsumi Tatsuzawa. Currently, four volumes are available, but it seems the creator, Fujii, has ideas for how the story will evolve beyond the existing manga.
This show is part of a growing trend of death game series on Netflix. Similar to the hit Japanese series Alice in Borderland – which recently became Netflix’s most popular live-action Japanese original – it demonstrates how much audiences enjoy shows with incredibly risky and dangerous situations.
If Last Samurai Standing gets renewed, Fujii would be able to move forward with his vision for the show. He intentionally fit a lot into the first season, so he might be able to wrap up the story in a second season. However, the series has a lot of potential and could continue in many different ways.
