Oz Perkins, a horror director who recently found success with films like Longlegs and The Monkey, may be facing a downturn. His latest movie, Keeper, has received a particularly low score, potentially signaling a shift from his recent winning streak – those two hits were released just six months apart.
The new horror mystery, Keeper, starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland, hits theaters tomorrow, November 14th. The film centers on a couple whose anniversary getaway to a remote cabin turns terrifying when Maslany’s character, Liz, is haunted by a sinister presence, and their relationship is put to the test.
I’ve been following the buzz around Keeper, and it’s interesting how little they showed before the release. Apparently, that was intentional! Like with Longlegs, they really wanted to build suspense and let the mystery draw people in. Luckily, the director, Perkins, has a great reputation, which might still get people to see it even though the early reviews are pretty mixed. Things could definitely change as more reviews come out, but right now, Keeper is starting off with a bit of an uphill battle.
The movie Keeper received a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from 16 critics, which qualifies it as “fresh,” but it’s Perkins’ lowest-rated film on the site in the last two years. Longlegs currently has an 86% rating, and The Monkey has 77%. Overall, Keeper is the second-lowest-rated movie Perkins has ever directed.
Director Zach Perkins might be back on track with his new film, The Young People, which has just added Nicole Kidman to its cast. The movie will star Lola Tung, known from The Summer I Turned Pretty, and Nico Parker, who voiced Astrid in How to Train Your Dragon. Tatiana Maslany, who previously worked with Perkins, will also appear in the film. Currently, details about the story are still under wraps.
Most actors and directors have projects that don’t quite live up to expectations when they’re building a career. Perkins’ film, Keeper, might be one of those, or simply not showcase him at his strongest. However, it’s still gaining some positive attention with recent reviews, and The Young People could become a breakthrough for Perkins, similar to how Weapons was for Zach Cregger.
