A new Ratchet & Clank game is here, but with a twist! Called Ranger Rumble, it’s a free-to-play shooter available only on mobile devices. It’s only the second new game in the series in almost a decade.
The Ratchet & Clank series began in 2002 with the first game developed by Insomniac Games for the PlayStation 2. Over the next ten years, a total of twelve main games were released, plus several spin-offs, making it a hugely successful franchise for PlayStation.
Recently, the series has been largely inactive because Insomniac Games has been concentrating on Marvel titles such as Spider-Man and Wolverine. Over the last ten years, they’ve only released two Ratchet & Clank games: one in 2016 and another in 2021.
After a four-year wait, a third game has been announced, but it’s different than many fans anticipated. It’s called Ranger Rumble, and it’s a free-to-play game available only on mobile devices.
New Ratchet & Clank mobile game explained
Though we previously released Going Mobile in 2005, Ranger Rumble is a shooting game heavily inspired by Ratchet & Clank. Players can control characters like Captain Qwark and even create their own unique Lombax hero, all while striving to earn the title of Galactic Ranger.
Oh BiBi, the studio creating the game, has been making mobile games since 2012. They’re known for titles like Frag Pro Shooter, which has been downloaded over 150 million times.
I’m really excited about Ranger Rumble, but it’s still in early access right now. That means you can only play it in certain areas if you signed up beforehand, but the developers are planning to open it up to more regions soon. Honestly, there’s no word yet on when the full game will actually be released – no dates or even estimates, unfortunately!
Looking at early gameplay streams, it appears the game has a shop where you can buy items with real money to personalize and improve your characters. It also includes a Battle Pass, called the Qwark Pass.
The game launches with three different ways to play: a classic deathmatch, a fast-paced mode called Bolt Rush, and Blast Ball, which is similar to Rocket League.
Unlike other projects revealed in the 2023 Insomniac Games data leak, this one wasn’t mentioned. The leak did reveal that the next major Ratchet & Clank game is currently planned for release in 2029.
