Troy Baker, known for his roles in several Naughty Dog games, is collaborating with the studio again on their new project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. He recently shared his experiences working with director Neil Druckmann, explained how it felt to play a supporting role instead of the main character in a Naughty Dog game, and talked about his aspiration to build a career like that of George Clooney.
Troy Baker recently told ComicBook that despite working with Neil Druckmann on a new project called Intergalactic, after their collaborations on The Last of Us (where Baker played Joel) and Uncharted 4 (as Sam), they still often disagree with each other.
You know, me and Neil just have this thing, we always playfully challenge each other. It’s how we roll! We were doing a read-through for something recently, and I actually called him out on giving me a hard time when I was just trying to get an answer. Everyone else around us was getting awkward, like we were about to have a huge fight, but honestly, we’re good! Everything’s cool between us.
Baker didn’t reveal the details of his disagreement with Druckmann, and very little is known about his role or the overall story of the Intergalactic game.
In the interview, Baker talked about his role in Intergalactic coming after being a main character in the Last of Us. He mentioned he was happy to take a less central role this time, with Tati Gabrielle’s character, Jordan A. Mun, as the star.
Looking back, I’ve had an incredible career, and I feel I’ve earned everything I’ve received from this industry. I’m grateful for the journey. I don’t feel entitled to anything further. However, I’m really enjoying my work now. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of game development, and I find the creative process itself more rewarding than receiving recognition. I’m happy with my current role at Intergalactic, which I still believe is a significant one.
Naughty Dog is currently developing a game called Intergalactic for PlayStation 5. According to Neil Druckmann, it will have the most complex gameplay of any Naughty Dog title so far. The game isn’t likely to be available until 2027. The studio might also be planning a third installment in The Last of Us series.
“I want to be like George Clooney“
Baker shared his long-term career goals, explaining he aspires to have a career similar to George Clooney – the successful actor who has worked for many years in a variety of film types.
Baker explained he admires the Coen Brothers’ film O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Michael Clayton, as well as the director’s overall body of work. He believes the reason George Clooney consistently lands roles in popular films like Ocean’s Eleven, Up in the Air, and The American is simply because he’s a joy to work with and a remarkably talented creator.
Baker’s career
Troy Baker is famous for his work in games like Uncharted and The Last of Us, but he has a very extensive career beyond those titles. He’s also voiced popular characters such as Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite, Rhys in Tales from the Borderlands, and Talion in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. More recently, he played Agent Jones in Fortnite. Baker isn’t just a hero; he’s also played villains like Pagan Min in Far Cry 4 and Higgs in Death Stranding, and he’s even voiced Batman in various Lego games.
I recently got to play as Indiana Jones in ‘Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,’ which was awesome! Even Harrison Ford himself checked it out and said he loved my performance – and that it was all done without any AI help, which is pretty cool, right?
In 2022, author Blake Baker worked with a blockchain firm named Voiceverse, which led to controversy involving artificial intelligence and accusations of plagiarism. He later ended the partnership and admitted to making harsh statements when it initially began.
Besides being an actor, Baker is a musician with several albums to his name. He also played the character James, a cannibal, in an episode of the first season of HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’.
