The Pitt Is Scrubbing Up for a Residency on TNT

After becoming a hit on HBO Max and earning praise from critics, The Pitt is set to expand its reach before the end of 2025. Starting December 1st, the medical drama will air on TNT for five weeks, with three unedited episodes shown every Monday at 9 p.m., according to Vulture. This strategy was first mentioned seven months ago by Casey Bloys, head of HBO and Max Content, who said the show would appear on TNT before the second season premieres.

It’s becoming common for streaming shows to also air on traditional TV – for example, Hulu’s Paradise recently aired on ABC shortly after its online release. However, HBO Max is taking a different approach with The Pitt on TNT. Instead of releasing episodes weekly like on the streaming service, TNT will offer five sets of episodes at once each Monday, creating more of a binge-watching event. This strategy is likely intended to avoid confusing viewers into thinking the show has moved platforms, something HBO’s content chief hinted at earlier this year. He explained that putting a current streaming show on another channel could lead people to believe they can watch all Max shows on TNT, which is acceptable for promotion as long as it’s not overdone.

Showing The Pitt on TNT is strategically timed to promote its return. The episodes will air on TNT several weeks before the second season begins streaming on Max in January, giving TNT a chance to heavily advertise the show’s availability on the streaming service and reinforce that Max is where viewers can consistently find it. According to Bloys, streaming and traditional TV audiences are different enough that this approach works, but it’s a decision that needed careful consideration.

TNT’s choice to air HBO Max’s The Pitt without any edits – including strong language and nudity – shows they aren’t just trying to make a quick profit from the show on cable. While cable networks aren’t as restricted by content rules as traditional broadcasters, some advertisers avoid shows with excessive violence or graphic content. By keeping The Pitt’s most intense scenes intact, TNT might be sacrificing some advertising revenue. However, according to TNT, these scenes are crucial to realistically showing the emotional impact of the medical profession on those who work in it. TNT will also provide viewers with warnings before each episode and after commercial breaks. Despite the potentially sensitive content, many advertisers are expected to buy ad space on The Pitt, both on TNT and HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery highlighted the series – and its executive producer, John Wells – during their presentation to advertisers in May, also confirming the show would air on TNT.

I’m really excited about The Pitt coming to TNT in December! It’s a great way to build anticipation for the second season, but I also think the timing is brilliant. It lines up perfectly with voting for the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards – those voters will definitely be paying attention! Honestly, The Pitt already proved its quality with all the Emmy buzz, so it probably doesn’t need extra visibility, but this just ensures everyone remembers how amazing it is when they cast their votes. It’s a smart move, and I can’t wait to see it get the recognition it deserves.
