After twelve years of expansions for Europa Universalis IV, Paradox Interactive has released the highly anticipated Europa Universalis V. Like many new games, it’s experiencing some technical issues, including crashes, which may require adjusting the graphics settings. Once you get it running, be prepared for a complex game with many new mechanics to learn. Let’s start with one of the most crucial: Antagonism. This system is key to warfare, functioning alongside concepts like Casus Belli and troop levies.
What is Antagonism in EU5?
Antagonism works much like the Aggressive Expansion system in the game Europa Universalis 4. It’s a modified version of that mechanic, so if you’re familiar with it, you’ll understand the general idea. Essentially, it’s a penalty for being overly aggressive. Antagonism lowers how other countries view you, and it’s triggered when you start repeatedly declaring war on and taking land from your neighbors.
Antagonism operates on a straightforward principle: it focuses on your country, with neighboring nations feeling the strongest impact. As distance increases, the effect weakens – meaning countries further away are less concerned with what you do. The good news is that this antagonism naturally fades over time.
How quickly conflict escalates can also be affected by things like religion, language, cultural norms, and the political climate. Therefore, it’s important to consider who you’re targeting with your attacks.
Being overly aggressive will make it difficult to negotiate with other nations. If your hostility level reaches 50, other countries might form an alliance against you. Without a powerful military, this could lead to unfavorable outcomes. Fortunately, you have a special map feature that displays your hostility level, helping you manage your relationships with your neighbors.
It’s best to avoid high levels of Antagonism, particularly when you’re first starting the game. Think through your choices carefully. While some players might enjoy the challenge of maintaining high Antagonism, that wasn’t the developers’ original vision for how the game would be played.
