Elon Musk and Sam Altman argue. It started with a Tesla contract that remained unfulfilled for 7 years

Just a few screenshots shared by Sam Altman were all it took for Elon Musk to publicly criticize the OpenAI CEO. The two quickly began trading insults, arguing over who was a worse leader or more careless about the impact of their work. But many online believe this is just a show, designed to protect their reputations as visionary leaders shaping the future.

Elon Musk and Sam Altman argue on social media

In late October, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, ran into a problem with a Tesla he reserved seven years ago – he still hadn’t received the car. When he tried to cancel the order, he found the cancellation option was no longer available. Elon Musk responded with accusations that Altman had “stolen” OpenAI, which was originally intended to be an open-source initiative.

Okay, so it didn’t take Sam Altman long to call Elon Musk out! He basically reminded everyone that Musk was the one who left OpenAI in the first place. Altman stepped in, saved the company, and now look at it – it’s actually making money. It brought back memories of an email Musk sent way back in 2017, too.

Guys, I’ve had enough. This is the final straw.

Please decide whether to operate independently or remain a nonprofit organization. I’m pausing my funding until you commit to one path or another, because right now it feels like I’m unintentionally providing free money for a for-profit company.

Discussions are over.

Sam Altman seemed eager to move past the discussion, pointing out that both he and Elon Musk lead successful AI companies, despite Musk once claiming OpenAI had no chance of succeeding.

The conversation quickly became a source of amusement online, particularly on platforms like Reddit. People started joking that the two individuals should settle their differences with a cage fight, with the loser donating all their money to charity. Beyond the humor, many also noted the irony that both men present themselves as leaders who are shaping a better future for everyone.

These two figures have profoundly impacted technology and now publicly claim to be acting for the benefit of everyone. However, their actions are more about protecting their own ideas and the powerful businesses they’ve built.

Most people think this disagreement won’t amount to much in the end. Both sides have tried to find damaging information about each other, but like the public feud between Zuckerberg and Musk, it will likely be forgotten soon.
