Lucas is really struggling this season. After everything that happened to Max in season four, he blames himself for not being able to prevent it. While he did manage to help and even save her in some ways, he still feels guilty, like he could have done more to protect her.

In Season 4, Max withdrew from others after the death of her stepbrother, Billy, and her resulting trauma made her vulnerable to Vecna. Although Lucas, Dustin, and others managed to save her during Vecna’s first attack, she was still deeply affected when he targeted her again. In the season finale, Vecna killed Max, but Eleven briefly brought her back to life, leaving her in a coma. Despite Lucas’s efforts to protect her, Caleb McLaughlin, who plays Lucas, has explained that his character feels responsible for Max’s condition.

As a huge Stranger Things fan, I’ve been analyzing the Season 5 trailers, and it’s clear Lucas is going to do everything he can for Max.
