Code Vein II Buddy system explained in more detail

Bandai Namco recently released a Japanese press statement with more details about the ‘Buddy’ system in Code Vein II. The announcement explains how Buddies can help you during gameplay and gives a short overview of the six Buddies revealed so far.

Here are the latest details about Code Vein II. The game will launch globally on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC (via Steam) on January 30, 2026. Players in Japan will be able to purchase the console versions starting January 29, 2026.

  • HP and LP (Link Points) – The latter indicates the linkage between you and your Buddy. When you take damage, the LP will be depleted first and your HP will only be depleted if the LP gauge is already empty. And when you are recovering, the HP gauge will fill first and any excess amount will then be used to recover LP.
  • Buddy Buffs
    • Link Trait – Each Revenant Buddy will have a different Link Trait that will give a benefit during battles and/or explorations, but it will only be valid when there is a strong linkage with the LP gauge not depleted.
    • Buddy Bonus Trait – Buffs to player stats or actions that will permanently apply by choosing the specific Buddy, and the effects can be amplified by improving your relationship with them.
  • Buddy Actions
    • Revenant Attack – Buddies can also use Revenant Attacks to absorb blood from enemies. They can also share some of the blood with the player, which will recover a small amount of Ichor.
    • Gift Heal – When the player is knocked out, the Buddy can use Gift Heal to revive you. However, this will cause the Buddy to become unavailable for a good while.
  • Buddy Change – You can change your current Buddy anytime at a checkpoint. There is also a generic Jail Equipment called Guardian’s Heart that will let you sortie without any Buddy.

I’m so excited – Bandai Namco just revealed more about the companions, or ‘Buddies,’ you can have with you in the game! They’ve shown off six of them so far. Just a heads-up, some of the details about what these Buddies do – like their special abilities – are still being translated, so the final English version might be a little different.

  • Lou MagMell – Weapon: One-handed Sword; Drain Type: Bat; Link Trait: Recovers Ichor when taking damage
Lou also has two supportive spells: Prismatic Wall (Increases defense against elemental attacks) and Order Rise (Prolongs buff durations). She also has a War Axe skill that decreases the movement speed of the hit enemies.

  • Josee Anjou – Weapon: Two-handed Sword; Drain Type: Hound; Link Trait: Increases Defense and Toughness when charging attack
Her support spell Armor Drop will make enemies easier to flinch. She can also launch a sweeping fire attack that also generates multiple flame pillars.

  • Lyle McLeish – Weapon: One-handed Sword; Drain Type: Reaper; Link Trait: Obtains Ichor when performing Invincible Evasion
He will occasionally use Overdrive on both himself and the player, which will buff their attack power until each of them are hit by damage. Also has a Sword skill attack imbued with thunder.

  • Holly Asturias – Weapon: Bayonet; Drain Type: Stinger; Link Trait: Increases spell usage speed
Her supportive spell Panacea Essence will remove all status ailments, which will be very useful when fighting enemies that deal ailments. Her action skill Gracious Barrage will have her shoot multiple lasers on enemies.

  • Noah G. MagMell – Weapon: Twin Swords; Drain Type: Ogre; Link Trait: Reduces stamina consumption
He can use Deep Impact that makes enemies easier to Break, as well as Active Record that increases the player’s maximum stamina.

Valentin can occasionally cast Authority, which will increase the spell usage speed for both himself and the player. He also has multi-hit attack spells like Blast Bolt and Blood Impact.
