Embark Studios recently tested its upcoming game, ARC Raiders, with a three-day online event. Over 180,000 players participated, exploring a futuristic, broken Earth and collecting resources. This “server slam” helped the developers gather important feedback to fine-tune the game before its official release on October 30th.
Following a very positive playtest, players started speculating that the game would soon match players based on the quality of their team’s equipment. The team behind ARC Raiders has responded, clarifying that while they haven’t ruled out gear-based matchmaking for the future, they aren’t planning to add it at this time.
Gear-Based Matchmaking Is A Back-Up Plan
In multiplayer shooting games, it’s important that everyone has a fair chance to win. This means no player or team should have an unfair edge. Creating this balance is challenging because things like team size, equipment quality, and player skill all vary.
Anyone who enjoys extraction shooter games knows the frustration of running into a fully equipped, four-player team when you’re playing alone. Unless you get incredibly lucky or manage to escape unnoticed, you’re almost guaranteed to lose everything you’ve collected.
This creates the necessity for balance, and the ARC Raiders team has a plan in place.
We’ve looked at different matchmaking ideas in the past, like matching players based on their gear. However, our current priority is keeping solo players separate from squads to make sure everyone has a fair experience. After the game launches, we’ll keep a close eye on how matchmaking is working and will continue to improve it. Our goal is to provide players with fun, diverse, and balanced matches.
Currently, players exploring ARC Raiders on their own won’t have to worry about being attacked by groups of enemies. However, they’ll still need to be careful when encountering players with superior equipment. The game allows players to equip shields, enhancements, medical items, and grenades, and also lets them create and improve weapons to increase their damage and chances of survival.
Without a system to match players based on their equipment level, newcomers are easily at a disadvantage, like sending someone with a simple weapon into a fight against a heavily armed opponent.
However, there’s also a bright side: this gives less experienced players a chance to win, defeat stronger opponents with smart strategies, and take their valuable, improved weapons.
You can now pre-order ARC Raiders, which will be released on October 30th for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
